Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Development, the Assistant Dean for Faculty Development supports the Offices for Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs by managing the recruitment and retention of tenure-track faculty and internal tenure promotion offers. The Assistant Dean for Faculty Development works closely with department chairs and divisional deans to negotiate and develop offers, including salary, research funding, terms of appointment, benefits and work/life matters. He/she handles issues surrounding the relocation and transition to Harvard, makes introductions to internal and external organizations, and assists with job searches for family members. Maintains records on the progress of tenure-track faculty offers, and coordinates requests for data and reporting on faculty offers and new faculty. The Assistant Dean for Faculty Development also oversees the New England Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (New England HERC), an initiative sponsored by Harvard in collaboration with 65 area schools, and supervises the New England HERC Director. Manages recruitment for endowed lectureships: DeBosis, Erasmus, and Norton, by developing and writing offers, reviewing budgets, and collaborating with faculty advisory committees. Together with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Development, the Assistant Dean contributes to policy development and implementation as part of the Faculty Affairs team and in consultation with divisional assistant deans and other colleagues, with respect to recruitment and retention related practices and objectives; ensures coherent integration and mutual recognition of faculty development goals within broader faculty affairs policy. Assists the Senior Associate Dean in managing the Administrative Coordinator and office procedures, drafts correspondence, prepares briefings, and carries out research and special projects for the Senior Associate Dean, Dean for Faculty Affairs, and the Divisional Deans.

Basic Qualifications
A graduate degree and a minimum of six years’ experience in academic administration.

Additional Qualifications
An earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree is preferred. Knowledge of Harvard and working with faculty is highly desirable. Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent analytical, oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters with discretion. Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work effectively under pressure and as part of a team.
