Elizabeth City State University Strengthens Ties to the U.S. Coast Guard

Historically Black Elizabeth City State University has signed an agreement with the U.S. Coast Guard to strengthen the College-Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative. This program provides ECSU students with a pathway to a career as an officer in the Coast Guard.

Students from ECSU who meet the program requirements will become members of the Coast Guard and enter Officer Candidate School upon graduation. After that, they can choose any career path within the Coast Guard. The program at ECSU has produced 19 officers, and currently three students are earning their degrees before they head off to officer school.

The Coast Guard chose to partner with ECSU because of the university’s one-in-a-kind aviation program. Students can begin their pilot training at ECSU and earn a degree in aviation before moving on to careers in the Coast Guard. Currently, ECSU’s aviation degree is the only program of its kind in the state of North Carolina.
