Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean of Students is a central part of UNCG’s efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive environment, with particular emphasis on student retention and success. In an effort to create a culture of care for students, the Assistant Dean hears concerns, interprets policies and procedures, explores options, and makes appropriate referrals to campus and community resources as necessary. The Assistant Dean position utilizes counseling, crisis management, leadership, mediation and advocacy skills in working with students, families, faculty, and staff. The Assistant Dean must continually balance the needs of the individual student while upholding the policies and processes of the University. The Assistant Dean must be able to deal effectively with emotionally charged situations and disruptive individuals, and use professional and appropriate language and behavior to provide positive university experiences. This position works collaboratively with other offices across campus to address student needs at the departmental, institutional and individual student level.

The Assistant Dean will provide support to a diverse range of students in need and crisis; consult with faculty and staff on a variety of issues impacting student success and well-being; manage Dean of Students Office processes, outreach and services related to sexual violence education and response; present interactive workshops and presentations focusing on a variety of topics including, but not limited to: parent and family issues, students in distress, sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence, managing disruptive behavior, as well as other state and federal mandates and external regulations; represent the Dean of Students Office at campus events as necessary; serve in a 24-hour on-call duty rotation responding to campus emergencies as necessary; other duties as assigned; some evening and weekend work required.

Support to Students

  • Interacts daily with students, faculty, staff, and parents and families to address student emergencies or issues of concern, exploring options and resources that support student success
  • Monitors the Starfish Early Alert system, providing appropriate follow up and outreach to students experiencing personal concerns
  • Works with special student populations, incorporating best practices while advocating for student needs within the University community

Leadership and Supervision

  • Directly supervises the Student Services Manager and one graduate assistant
  • Provides leadership within the Dean of Students Office in the absence of the Associate Dean of Students

Outreach and Education

  • Coordinates services and outreach to students impacted by sexual and gender-based harassment, sex discrimination, and other forms of interpersonal violence.
  • Presents interactive workshops and trainings focusing on a variety of topics including, but not limited to: parent and family issues, students in distress, sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence, managing disruptive behavior, and other topics and issues related to students.
  • Represents the Dean of Students Office at University events such as student orientation, Take Back the Night, homecoming, parent and family weekend, and other events as necessary.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Provide/encourage campus-wide coordination, communication, collaboration, and recognition of programs and services related to student well-being, student behavior, and student success.
  • Serves on committees, task forces and working groups within the Division of Student affairs as well as across the campus community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required from an accredited four-year college or university. Master’s degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling or a related field of study
  • Minimum of 3 years of full-time experience, post Master’s degree, contributing to student well-being and success within a higher education setting
  • Experience working with a diverse population of students, including those with mental & physical health concerns.
  • Working knowledge of higher education law and policies, particularly related to Title IX and FERPA
  • Excellent communication and conflict management skills
  • Proven track record of developing collaborative partnerships with academic and student affairs units

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a Dean of Students Office
  • Direct experience responding to crisis situations
  • Direct experience working with instances of sexual violence
