University of Dayton — Postdoc Fellow, Human Rights Center

This position is based in the Human Rights Center (HRC) to conduct research on transitional justice and advocacy relating to the US-Vietnam War. The primary purpose of this research is to explore: 1) the types of justice-seeking that have occurred within the US-Vietnam War context, 2) the effectiveness of the various types of justice-seeking (e.g., veteran movements, memorialization, film and media, legal remedies, the Russell Tribunal), 3) comparison of the US-Vietnam context with other past human rights violations contexts, such as slavery reparations and justice for indigenous peoples, and 4) the impact and implications of the war’s legacy in contemporary US society, politics and military engagement including in Iraq and Afghanistan. The fellow will be supervised by the HRC Executive Director and will hold additional teaching and other duties to support various scholarship aspects of the HRC portfolio.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD (in hand or expected before date of hire) in a legal, social scientific or humanities field.
  • Research expertise in transitional justice or human rights.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in analysis related to US military and/or Vietnamese/Indochinese relations and/or history.
  • Effective written communication skills necessary to author research reports and publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to engage in international travel.
  • Due to the nature of the work US citizenship or permanent residency is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated successful experience teaching undergraduate or graduate courses
  • Field research experience in Vietnam/Indochina.
  • Field research experience in USA.
  • Demonstrated successful experience engaging in human rights advocacy projects.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to a Catholic Marianist work environment.
  • Demonstrated oral communication skills necessary to work in a multidisciplinary team environment and deliver research presentations.
