Description of Responsibilities: The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Financial Aid and supervises, plans, schedules and assigns work to student workers and support staff.

Additional duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Director also include:

  • Maintain a strong knowledge and understanding  and advise students and families on all aspects of the Federal, State and institutional financial aid application processes; satisfactory academic progress necessary to maintain eligibility to receive financial aid, and financial considerations of enrollment and retention
  • Advise students and families related to financial options available to them to meet college costs and make recommendations as appropriate within established regulations and guidelines
  • Support admissions and retention activities as they relate to student aid, including, but not limited to meeting with students and families at Admission events on campus and making presentations at high school nights, open houses, admissions programs, orientation, etc.
  • Coordinate Federal Title IV and New York State aid compliance efforts for the Financial Aid Office, including use and development of internal controls
  • Assist with Federal Return of Title IV funds process
  • Coordinate New York State TAP program
  • Assist with training and professional development of other staff
  • Monitor, approve, and revise all financial aid packaging for all qualified applicants in accordance with federal, state, institutional, and other regulations, policies and procedures
  • Review student financial aid applications for accuracy and completeness and certify student eligibility for Federal, State and institutional awards based on established procedures, regulations and guidelines. Authorize student awards for payment as appropriate
  • Independently research and benchmark best practices and make recommendations for implementation
  • Work with administrative computing programmer staff to develop tools to enhance correspondence with students and to streamline application processing, and as a liaison with other campus departments; i.e. Student Accounts, Residence Life and Housing, Administrative Computing, Registrar, Admissions, Provost, the Dean’s Office and academic departments
  • Serve on teams and committees as needed to fulfill the goals of the College
  • Champion the financial needs of a diverse student population
  • Foster positive collaborative relationships with campus and community constituents in addressing matters of common concern, including the enhancement of institutional commitment to an inclusive and accessible community of learning

In addition, the Assistant Director of Financial Aid will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree  at time of application
  • 5 years of progressively responsible college or university financial aid office experience 
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experienced technology user
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of New York State financial aid programs.
  • Ability to manage multiple functions 
  • Proven knowledge of and experience benchmarking and implementing financial aid – related best practices
  • Experience with Federal Return of Title IV funds regulations and processing

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree in business or relevant discipline.
  • 6-10 years of progressively responsible financial aid office experience
  • Experience coordinating all aspects of the Federal Return of Title IV funds process
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner financial aid software 
  • Experience with Argos software
  • SUNY Financial Aid Office Experience
