Four Black Women Appointed to Positions as Deans

Adrienne C. Webber has been named dean of the Digital Library and Learning Commons at Grambling State University in Louisiana. She was dean of library services at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Webber holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and a master’s degree in library service from Clark Atlanta University.

Tameka Angela Harper has been named dean of students at Tuskegee University in Alabama. She was vice president for student affairs and enrollment management and dean of students at Arkansas Baptist College.

Harper holds a bachelor’s degree in speech communication with an emphasis in political communications from Georgia State University and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of the District of Columbia. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in political science from Clark Atlanta University.

Enku Gelaye has been named vice president and dean of Campus Life at Emory University, effective in August 2019. She currently serves as vice chancellor of student affairs and campus life at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Gelaye holds a bachelor’s degree in print journalism from the University of Tennessee and a juris doctorate from the University of Georgia.

Valerie Ashby has been reappointed to another five-year term as dean of the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She has served as dean since 2015.

Dr. Ashby holds a bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
