University of Alabama at Birmingham — Accessible Technology Coordinator

The Accessible Technology Coordinator housed within Disability Support Services (DSS) is a multifaceted position which requires the incumbent to serve as the departmental and institutional advisor to meet technology needs of students with disabilities. The position includes making recommendations, providing consultation, and managing a caseload of students with disabilities. Reporting to the Director of Disability Support Services, the Accessible Technology Coordinator will provide guidance and education for the following: development and support of accessible academic courses, faculty trainings, and other areas of electronic accessibility university-wide.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides direct student service through the DSS registration process, evaluating tech needs, providing training and guidance on accessible technology.
  2. Provides direct support to faculty and staff on accessible academic courses, universal design, and other areas of digital accessibility university wide.
  3. Reviews disability documentation and makes determination of disability status and appropriate digital tools to address barriers.
  4. Coordinates and processes media captioning requests as well as books in alternative format requests.
  5. Collaborates and provides consultation to University departments on digital accessibility and cost effective products/procurement of products.
  6. Manages the DSS hardware and software inventory and licenses and makes recommendations for cost effective improvements.
  7. Researches existing and new technologies developed for us in higher educations; stays abreast of literature and computer programs relevant to accessible technology needs of Disability Support Services and the students served.
  8. Serves as Co-chair of the university’s Existing and Emerging Technologies Committee.
  9. Manages the AT intern and/or AT work-study student including hiring, supervising, termination, training, scheduling, and assigning duties.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Computer Science, Information Systems, Educational Technology or a related field and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
