Princeton University — Director, Presidential Scholars Program

The inaugural Director of the Presidential Scholars Program (PSP) will play a leading role in the creation, implementation, and management of a new, national doctoral pipeline program that will provide an intensive enrichment experience for non-Princeton college students. Princeton plans to welcome its first cohort of Presidential Scholars into a pilot program in the fall of 2019. The pilot program will be in partnership with colleges and universities in the state of New Jersey

Reporting to the Dean of the College and acting as the managing partner of a faculty director, the PSP Director will work collaboratively with the PSP Faculty Advisory Committee as well as colleagues in the Office of the Dean of the College, the Graduate School, and the Provost’s office. The director will also engage faculty members, post-docs, and graduate students who will mentor and advise program participants. In the first few years, the director will have the opportunity to work in collaboration with partner institutions to shape the form and components of the program and hire support staff.


  • In close partnership with the faculty director and the Dean of the College, provide leadership and vision to translate the mission and goals of the PSP into a functioning program. Develop strategies in collaboration with partner institutions to identify promising potential participants. Represent PSP within the University and in the broader graduate education inclusion and access community locally and nationally. Serve as a thought leader on scholarly diversity and bring national visibility to the program. Identify, develop, and maintain partnerships with institutions to co-create integrated and cohesive programs for coordinated advising and resources between the home institutions and Princeton.

Recruitment and curricular engagement:

  • Oversee the recruitment, application, and selection of scholars for admission to the program. Lead outreach activities. Recruit and engage faculty and other instructional and research staff and collaborate with faculty members on curricular design in the context of the program’s mission. Develop and maintain strong relationships with faculty members, post-docs, graduate students, and academic departments to provide academic support for scholars.


  • Coordinate academic support and non-academic support in partnership with the Office of Undergraduate Research, the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning, Princeton Writing Program, University Health Services, Office of International Programs, the Pace Center for Civic Engagement, as well as in collaboration with partner institution officials and faculty. Collaborate with colleagues running programs for success, inclusion, and opportunity in the Office of the Dean of the College, and diversity and inclusion programs in the Graduate School to deliver co-curricular programming, mentoring, and academic advising services during the summer and academic year.

Program Management:

  • Oversee all logistics and operations of the program. Hire and supervise professional staff, manage a budget, and supervise the maintenance of the PSP website and promotional materials. Develop and implement methods for program evaluation and assessment.


  • Engage with donors in support of the program. Engage directly with program participants and with their families. Develop and implement long-term engagement programming with PSP alumni.

Education: Doctorate

Work Experience: 7 – 9 years

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity and inclusion in higher education. Experience in the recruitment, retention, and support of students from historically underrepresented communities and lower socioeconomic backgrounds is critical. Demonstrated experience in creating or leading complex initiatives with a variety of constituents and stakeholders, especially collaborations between and across multiple organizations/institutions. Entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to think creatively and take initiative in a dynamic environment. Ability to think strategically, including the analytical acumen necessary to assess program impact, interpret financial information, and manage budgets. Familiarity with doctoral education and the ability to establish credibility with faculty members and other scholarly audiences. Demonstrated ability to advise, mentor, encourage, and inspire a diverse population of scholars.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and listening skills; poise and diplomacy when communicating and negotiating with individuals and groups. Deep emotional intelligence and empathy, especially for the challenges faced by minority scholars. Impeccable judgment and decision-making skills. Superior written and oral communication skills. Ability to take direction, and to give and receive constructive feedback; to hire and lead a team and to be an effective member of a broader office; to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment; and to tolerate ambiguity in a fluid working process.
