The Associate Vice President for Research & Dean of Graduate Education serves as the Chief Research Officer for the University reporting directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. This position provides visionary and strategic leadership for research and graduate education across the Division of Academic Affairs and the broader university. This position provides leadership in the development, maintenance and growth of the University's research infrastructure and capacity, external grants and contracts, and oversight responsibility for all operations of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, the Center for Excellence in Scholarship and Research, the Undergraduate Research Center, the Honors Program, the University Fellowships Office, Graduate Office, the Institutional Review Board, and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. This position is responsible for advancing high quality graduate programs and services, at both the master's and doctoral levels; cultivating an extensive array of partnerships and new initiatives; promoting graduate faculty leadership and development; increasing graduate student enrollment, learning, and achievement; and administration of budgets, facilities, and resources. Additionally, this position is responsible for federal and state compliance, professional standards of practice, policies and procedures, collective bargaining agreement implementation, recognition and awards, partnerships and exchanges, and resource development and fundraising. The Associate Vice President for Research & Dean of Graduate Education serves on the Council of Deans and President's Expanded Cabinet, chairs the graduate faculty and research committees, and acts in coordination with the System office to achieve divisional, university, and system strategic directions.

The position will require frequent evening and weekend work, and the ability to travel regionally, nationally, and internationally, to meet with a wide variety of stakeholders, partners, and other constituencies to meet the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Required Qualifications

  • Earned PhD or other terminal degree.
  • Combination of higher education administration experience (with increasing levels of responsibility, at the level of department chair or higher), and faculty experience (commensurate with tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor or professor in any discipline, with graduate or Honors faculty status), with a track record of successful experience and accomplishments in teaching excellence and innovation, research/scholarly/ creative endeavors, and external funding.
  • Demonstrated commitment to research and graduate education, and their role in the life of a comprehensive university.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective relationships across the University, both within Academic Affairs and with other divisions (e.g., Finance & Administration, Student Affairs & Enrollment Management, Information Technology, Advancement, etc.), to achieve strategic priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships with a broad portfolio of external stakeholders and constituencies throughout the world, including US and international higher education institutions, government agencies, and business and non-profit organizations, among others, to achieve strategic priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve compliance with international, federal, and state regulations and other requirements related to research and graduate education in a comprehensive university (e.g., Human Subjects/Institutional Review Board, Institutional Animal Care & Use, Responsible Conduct in Research, technology transfer, export control, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to promote and facilitate professional development for deans, faculty, and staff in research and graduate education.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote and increase graduate student enrollment, learning, engagement, and success.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically plan and manage resources (e.g. financial, personnel, facility, technology, etc.), to achieve strategic priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, support, and achieve results in external fund-raising, including grants, contracts, gifts, and other sources of revenue generation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Achievement of graduate faculty status in a research-intensive or regional comprehensive, master's large university.
  • Achievement of Honor's faculty status in public or private university or college.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead collaboratively and courageously, to find innovative approaches to solve problems and achieve ambitious goals.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends, challenges and opportunities, current standards, and effective practices in research and graduate education.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging graduate student populations, both international and US, face-to face and online.
  • Experience in curriculum design and program development, assessment and evaluation, program review, accreditation, academic support programs, and high-impact practices.
  • Experience with strategic planning and project management.
  • Experience in federal and state compliance.
  • Experience in policy and procedure development, implementation, and review.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve and expect a standard of excellence.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate articulately and inspirationally.
