Canadian Publisher Rates America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities

University Magazine was created as a class project for an alternative media and digital activism course at the University of Windsor. The online publication produces university rankings, recommendations, career advice, student health and dating tips, financial advice, lists of scholarship sources, and how-to guides.

Now the Canadian group has looked across the border to rank historically Black colleges and universities in the United States. According to the website, the rankings were based on statistics from the U.S. Department of Education and from student reviews.

Spelman College in Atlanta was rated the best overall HBCU. Howard University in Washington, D.C., was ranked second and Hampton University in Virginia held the third spot. Rounding out the top five were Morehouse College in Atlanta and Xavier University in New Orleans.

Also included in the top 10 HBCUs ranked by University Magazine are Fisk University, Claflin University, North Carolina A&T State University, Florida A&M University, and North Carolina Central University.

Canadian students interested in HBCUs in the United States could have read the U.S. News & World Report rankings released last September. They are identical to those in the University Magazine article.
