U.S. Naval War College — Associate Director of the Teaching Excellence Center


The U.S. Naval War College, Newport, RI, invites applicants for a faculty appointment as Associate Director of the Teaching Excellence Center at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The successful applicant will help build a new center that will foster excellence in teaching among our civilian and active duty military teaching faculty.

Writing and Teaching Excellence Center: The position falls in the Writing and Teaching Excellence Center and the Associate Director will report to the Director of the Center. The Center falls under the Dean of Academics. The Writing Center was relaunched in July 2016 under new leadership and with an expanded faculty which has continued to grow since that time. Now the Center itself is expanding to build upon its writing-centered focus on learning to incorporate an additional emphasis on teaching. With the addition of the Associate Director of the Teaching Excellence Center, the overall center will become more of a center for teaching and learning. Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of the Associate Director is developing and maintaining faculty opportunities to enhance their teaching abilities that will complement and build upon their departments’ existing efforts in faculty development. Other responsibilities include teaching at least one elective course per year in history, international relations, security studies, or other closely related fields; conducting research; engaging in other service of benefit to the College and the profession; and participating in outreach activities. The candidate may also assist with related programs at the College. Anticipated start date is June 2019.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. The College seeks candidates with significant scholarly attainment, extensive teaching experience, and demonstrated expertise in the Teaching and Learning field.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens capable of obtaining and maintaining a Department of Defense SECRET security clearance.

Salary Considerations: Salary is competitive and is accompanied by a generous federal benefit package that includes health insurance and retirement saving plans (with employer matching contributions), paid vacation and sick leave, and other benefits. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and credentials in accordance with Department of the Navy Faculty Schedule.
