University of Maryland, Baltimore County — Assistant Technical Director / Master Electrician

UMBC Department of Theatre seeks an Assistant Technical Director/Master Electrician to provide technical support to the Technical Director and Lighting Designer for our four production academic season. UMBC Theatre has approximately 120 majors, offering a BA in Theatre with concentrations in Design and Production or Theatre Studies, and a BFA in Acting, all taught in our new state of the art facilities. The incumbent will provide technical support, student training and student supervision during the construction and installation of sets and the implementation of lighting and other systems for the Department of Theatre’s four show co-curricular production program.

Specific duties include:  supervise student crews constructing scenery and properties for department productions; assist Technical Director with drafting and engineering of scenic elements, creating and maintaining shop budgets and schedules; assist Lighting Designer with supervising student crews rigging, hanging, and focusing lighting instruments; construct rig, and automate scenery; maintain scene shop equipment and tools, theatre spaces and lighting equipment; teach courses in scenery construction, rigging, and/or stage operations; and perform other duties as assigned.

This position facilitates a safe work environment for all students, faculty, and staff in accordance with fire codes, OSHA rules, and UMBC policy.

This position requires a BA or BFA in Theatre or related field and two years professional experience, or an MFA in Technical Theatre. Candidate must possess expertise in scenery construction and engineering, shop management, and rigging. A proven high professional standard of scenery execution is imperative.  Must have effective organization, collaborative, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with students of differing skill levels. The ability to organize and complete multiple assignments under specific time constraints is required. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, lift up to 40 lbs., use stairs and ladders, and move up and down from the floor.
