University of Central Florida College of Medicine — Associate Vice President for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer

University of Central Florida
Associate Vice President (AVP) for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

THE OPPORTUNITY
The University of Central Florida College of Medicine (COM) has initiated a nationwide search for an innovative and accomplished administrator to serve as its Associate Vice President (AVP) for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Academic Health Sciences Center (AHSC) and College of Medicine. This is a unique opportunity for a respected and experienced financial leader to work as a key member of a group of visionary academic executives who understands the current state of academic medicine and appreciates the need to transform it to meet the needs of today’s patients, students, faculty and community of physicians/providers. Together, they will have an extraordinary opportunity to shape not only the culture of a 12-year old medical school which anchors the Lake Nona Medical City in Orlando, Florida, but the entire AHSC consisting of the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions and Sciences, and the emerging clinical enterprise that surrounds them.

As the Health Sciences enterprise expands in Central Florida with the anticipated opening of the UCF Lake Nona Medical Center university hospital in late 2020, as well as the UCF Lake Nona Cancer Center, the AVP/CFO will have responsibility for management of the fiscal aspects of public-private partnerships with entities such as HCA for the new hospital. This position has fiscal oversight of all missions of the College of Medicine, including UCF Health; the clinical practices for the COM which represents 31 clinical providers in 17 specialties and several support entities. Intended to evolve into an international medical destination just a few miles from the Orlando International Airport in a widely sought-after geographic region for industry, the type of growth envisioned for this medical enterprise is currently unparalleled in the United States.

The AVP/CFO will report to Deborah German, MD, Vice President (VP) for Health Affairs of the AHSC and Dean of the College of Medicine. The selected candidate will have significant independent responsibility for managing administrative services associated with the explosive growth planned for the UCF College of Medicine and the AHSC, and will oversee the College’s and AHSC’s financial operations.  The selected candidate will supervise directly or indirectly, the Assistant Dean of Finance, COM; the Executive Director of Health Sciences Business Operations, COM; the Director of Human Resources, COM; and the Assistant Director of Finance for UCF Health. The selected candidate will collaborate with the VP for Health Affairs/Dean and other key internal and external leaders and various committees in decision-making and management related to the above financial functions.  The selected candidate will facilitate key financial linkages between UCF AHSC and its components, including the College of Medicine, the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Professions and Sciences, the soon-to-be opened UCF Lake Nona Medical Center and UCF Lake Nona Cancer Center and other enterprise partners, as well as linkages with UCF students, faculty, and other departments across the university.  The selected candidate will ensure that UCF financial operations and messaging are consistent with the strategic plan and synchronized with the vision and mission of the College.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE
Established in 2006, the UCF College of Medicine is one of the first U.S. medical schools in decades to be built from the ground up. As a new medical school, UCF’s program epitomizes innovation, high-tech learning tools and a pioneering spirit to educate young doctors and scientists in a new and better way for the 21st century. UCF was the first medical school in the country to offer all its medical students iPads and its charter class graduated tuition-free thanks to generous $6.5M in donations from across the local community. In turn, these inaugural students raised another $300,000 to support similar scholarships for those who follow them.

The college is unique nationally because of its large undergraduate and graduate programs in biomedicine through its Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences. The Burnett School has almost 3,000 undergraduate majors — making it the third most popular major at UCF. The medical school also offers joint degrees, including an M.D./Ph.D., an M.D./M.B.A. and an M.D./M.S. degree in hospitality.

The UCF College of Medicine is a research-based medical school with a culture based on partnerships and collaboration. The college’s medical and biomedical programs capitalize on UCF’s existing strengths in biological sciences, modeling and simulation, engineering, optics and photonics, psychology, chemistry, film and digital media, business and nursing. Of note:

UCF Health is the college’s multi-specialty clinical practice comprised of 31 providers in 17 specialties, all of whom are College of Medicine faculty. UCF Health has a new growing surgical service line and two locations: near the main UCF campus and in Medical City.

The college is a founding member of Orlando’s growing Medical City at Lake Nona, a public-private partnership that is working to create a global health care destination in east Orlando. Medical City combines the energy and pursuit of excellence of a premier medical college with the resources of pre-eminent hospitals and world-renowned research institutes. The UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona includes the medical school’s 170,000-square-foot medical education facility, featuring the latest in lab and classroom technology, as well as its 198,000-square-foot Burnett Biomedical Sciences building. Other highlights of the Lake Nona Medical City include the second largest Veteran’s Administration Hospital in the United States with the nation’s premier simulation facility and Nemours Children’s Hospital. Groundbreaking has occurred for a new University Hospital known as the UCF Lake Nona Medical Center. It is anticipated to open in late 2020 and has shared ownership and governance by a UCF affiliate and HCA in a unique public-private partnership designed to facilitate expansive growth for the Medical City. UCF recently acquired the former Sanford Burnham Prebys building adjacent to the university hospital site and has plans and partnerships to establish a cancer research and treatment center.
