The Director of Lean Initiatives is responsible for facilitating and supporting the development of Lean initiatives for Miami University.  The position partners with university leaders and cross-functional departmental staff trained in Lean principles to build a continuous improvement culture and to improve processes underlying university operations and services to make them more efficient and effective.  The incumbent will be a mentor, coach, and the University’s resident expert in the application of Lean technology, tools and techniques as well as other continuous improvement methods.  The Director of Lean Initiatives also serves as an ambassador for continuous improvement with other organizations and institutions of higher education and is responsible for broadly communicating the benefits and outcomes of the University’s Lean initiatives.

Duties/Physical Demands: 

  • Employee Development: Maintains and improves the certification and training programs that support employee development in Lean principles and their roles as university change makers.
  • Culture: Encourages and advocates for a culture of “continuous improvement”.  Promotes collaboration through the formation of interdisciplinary teams with diverse perspectives on how to best accomplish project goals and objectives. Identifies critical stakeholders for each project, facilitates the formation of high performing cross functional project teams, and empowers the assigned teams to implement operational changes and process improvements. Leads and facilitates change management activities and assists administrative leaders in preparing for and sustaining change at the University.
  • Structure: Develops and maintains a Lean organizational structure consisting of steering teams, project improvement teams, training programs, communication methods, certification programs, an effective website, Lean Idea program and a system for tracking performance achievements as well as providing reward and recognition for the individual and departmental accomplishments. Works with Senior Department/Division Lean Leaders to organize the Lean management system and effectively execute the Lean Program.
  • Project Management – Manages Lean transformation teams, project execution, and systems and process development. Coordinates project team work and monitors the progress of all projects. Develops systems and processes through identification and implementation of effective ‘best practices’.
  • Leadership: Develops and manages a Lean Initiatives Program. This requires interfacing with all levels of management, developing a project structure and overseeing the investment in employees to assure objectives are met and sustained. Facilitates Lean steering teams in the development of an organizational vision for the Lean program that produces positive changes towards operational excellence. As a role model and mentor, launches all activities needed to incorporate Lean methodology into the university’s culture. Identifies, develops, coaches, mentors and manages the Lean Leaders organization (currently 18 members) for all 6 divisions of the university.
  • Strategic Deployment: Acts as a change agent by engineering process improvements through the formation and management of Lean Projects that meet the Strategic Goals of the University.
  • Communications:  Develops and manages a system that records, monitors and tracks all projects from the idea and strategic initiative stage through completion providing comprehensive performance reporting in real time as well as an employee certification program that recognizes the knowledge gained and achievements of employees participating in the program. Effectively communicates team results to all internal and external customers through a variety of approaches including a Lean website and a monthly newsletter. Manages a reward and recognition program for the participating employees. Assures effective flow of information throughout a project and across projects and develops materials for presentation about accomplishments for internal and external audiences.
  • Financial Goals: Meets financial objectives including participation in budget development, tracking and monitoring of program performance against budget and institutional goals; provides regular reporting, analysis, and recommendations as appropriate regarding program deliverables and other key performance metrics.
  • Training: Assesses and identifies Lean training needs and coordinates team member educational opportunities with the Office of Human Resources. May teach and train teams, Senior Lean Leaders and individuals on the application of Lean specific tools and techniques including the Lean Certification Program.
  • Ambassador: Represents Miami University on a national level as a leading university in continuous improvement efforts aimed at achieving improved affordability, efficiency and excellence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Engineering required.
  • Minimum of seven years of progressively increasing business experience
  • Minimum of five years Lean program or other continuous improvement experience with at least three years in a leadership role for a program.
  • Lean or Six Sigma certification required.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Extensive previous experience in implementation of Lean Projects preferably in a Lean service environment.
  • Proven record with Lean Six Sigma to drive business results.
  • Qualified to train and utilize key Lean / Continuous Improvement disciplines (i.e. Value Stream Mapping, Standard Work, Visual Management, Metrics, Quality, Lean Daily Management, 6S, Kanban, DMAIC, SIPOC, Problem Solving, etc.).
  • Outstanding facilitation and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be self-directed, well organized and have good follow-up skills.
  • Must have strong experience in change management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead without direct authority and to respond to the demands of a changing environment.
  • Extensive Project Management experience and proficiency in Microsoft Products and/or other project tools.
  • Able to mentor and facilitate a Lean culture in an environment with varying acceptance of traditional business principles.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent in time management in order to successfully manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Effective inter-personal relation skills, while maintaining the adaptability to achieve University goals.
