Duties & Responsibilities

The Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) invites applications for the position of Director of Professional Pedagogy. The director contributes to the school’s mission to deliver world class professional education by designing and delivering a variety of services for our faculty.

HKS is a professional graduate school of public policy and public service. Its 150+ faculty are drawn from traditional academic disciplines and from distinguished careers in government and non-profit leadership. Its 900+ degree program students range from two or three years out of college to mid-career professionals working toward Master’s degrees. Nearly half the students are international, with students originating from 80+ countries. HKS also trains nearly 4,000 mid- to senior-level practitioners each year in 70+ Executive Education programs.

The Director of Professional Pedagogy is a critical part of the program to Strengthen Learning and Teaching Excellence (SLATE) at HKS. This position reports to the Director of SLATE. The Director of Professional Pedagogy is an integral member of this team, leading the efforts to design and deliver pedagogical training programs to help faculty deliver the highest quality of professional education. As a learning organization, SLATE actively works to develop innovative new offerings that help our faculty advance the learning of HKS students, and the successful candidate will be an important partner in this endeavor.

The Director will conduct confidential one-on-one faculty coaching sessions to help improve teaching and course development skills and pedagogical effectiveness. The successful candidate will plan and facilitate several critical programs for faculty, including a two-day New Faculty Institute (NFI) which focuses primarily on orienting new faculty to teaching in the unique and diverse HKS professional school environment. They will also plan, publicize and debrief a series of SLATE programs which include: faculty lunch seminars, workshops and Teaching Week.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Analyze the strengths and areas of opportunity for pedagogy at HKS; develop and implement a comprehensive plan of activities to improve pedagogy. Emphasize diversity, inclusion and belonging in every aspect of pedagogy.
  • Work with individual faculty members to help them improve their teaching and course development skills. Services will include but not be limited to consultations on course design; design of assignments, exercises, and simulations; classroom management strategies; pre-class planning; classroom observation; guidance on integrating student feedback, etc.
  • Deploy best-practice methods for counseling, advising, mentoring individuals.
  • Follow developments in pedagogy and related fields and incorporate relevant ideas into SLATE programs and services. Identify and disseminate specific techniques and tools relevant to HKS faculty.
  • Establish effective working relationships with teaching and learning centers across Harvard and at other universities to share best-practice.
  • Works with the Director of Educational Technology to deploy instructional technology to advance teaching objectives; educates and encourages HKS faculty to effectively integrate instructional technology as a teaching tool.

Basic Qualifications

Advanced degree, and minimum of 5 years of faculty development and coaching experience.

Additional Qualifications

Doctorate degree (preferred);
An understanding of the particular challenges of professional school teaching;
Experience with case method teaching;
Working knowledge of the scholarship of teaching and learning.
