The Department of Communication Studies at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications for the position of Department Chair, to begin September 2019. A Ph.D. in Communication or Media Studies and scholarly credentials warranting tenure as an Associate or full Professor required. The successful candidate will have effective leadership, administrative, problem-solving, and people skills; have a commitment to maintaining a strong department; demonstrate excellence in teaching undergraduates and M.A.  students; support colleagues’ intellectual and professional development; maintain a fair and encouraging environment for students, staff, and faculty; represent the department within the university; and demonstrate competence in managing faculty, GTAs, and staff. Experience with fundraising and grant-writing is a plus. This person will also establish and maintain strong connections with local organizations and increase connections with alumni.

Preferred candidates will be expected to meet the traditional requirements of excellence in teaching, active scholarly and professional work, and service to the University and community. Previous chair experience preferred. In addition, new faculty are encouraged to develop and participate in activities that support the University’s strategic plan. This plan emphasizes five areas: Goal 1: Student Success; Goal 2: Faculty and Staff Success; Goal 3: Resource Sustainability and Expansion; Goal 4: Community Engagement and Partnerships; and Goal 5: Identity. Nestled in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, CSUSB (a Hispanic-Serving Institution) is located in San Bernardino in the Inland Empire region of Southern California, 70 miles east of Los Angeles.   The campus has been voted the most beautiful of the 23 campuses in the Cal State system; and CSUSB offers easy access to beaches, mountains, and desert resorts. The rapidly expanding Inland Empire metropolitan area offers a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities.  Housing costs average substantially below those of the adjacent Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

CSUSB offers programs through the Colleges of Arts and Letters, Business and Public Administration, Education, Natural Sciences and Social and Behavioral Sciences, and operates a satellite campus in Palm Desert located in Coachella Valley.  CSUSB serves approximately 20,700 students and offers 47 undergraduate and 35 graduate degrees, including one doctoral degree, as well as 13 programs with national accreditation. The Department offers a B.A. in Communication Studies with concentrations in Media Studies, Public Relations, and Human and Organizational Communication; and an M.A. in Communication Studies.

Typical Activities
Collaborating with Communication Studies Department staff in the running of the department; in collaboration with full time faculty, scheduling of Communication Studies classes; managing department budget; hiring of temporary faculty; scheduling, organizing, and running department faculty meetings; attending Chairs Council meetings; maintaining contact with department alumnae.

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Communication or Media Studies by time of appointment. A demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of university students, faculty and staff. Scholarly credentials warranting tenure as an Associate or full Professor.
