Counseling & Psychological Services seeks to hire one full-time (non-tenure track) academic-year counselor to provide excellent clinical services, including individual, couples and group counseling, initial screenings/intakes of students seeking services, crisis coverage (including non-life threatening issues) and emergency intervention (including hospitalization), the facilitation of on-campus and external referrals, treatment planning and clinical services in the form of consultation and testing/screening (as needed). Duties also include indirect clinical services in form of consultation and outreach services (i.e., psycho-educational programs) to various constituencies on campus (e.g., student organizations, faculty and staff), serving as a resource to university offices in an effort to enhance student life, and, if licensed and eligible to supervise, providing clinical supervision for unlicensed clinicians. Some evening and weekend hours are required to meet workload demands and/or departmental responsibilities, and to provide quality services.

Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a doctorate or a Master’s degree in clinical or counseling psychology or behavioral sciences by time of appointment

  • A valid license to practice as a Psychologist in California, or if licensed in another state, eligible for reciprocity per CA Business and Professions Code Chapter 6.6 Article 3 § 2946 (see or licensed within a year, or licensed to practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California at time of application
  • Pre-licensed applicants will be considered if eligible for licensure within one year of initial appointment

Experience Required:

  • Experience in brief counseling with individuals, couples, and groups utilizing professional therapy orientations, techniques and strategies
  • Experience in crisis intervention and working with a broad range of presenting problems
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Experience developing and implementing a broad range of psychoeducational services, workshops and presentations
  • Experience/interest in supervising unlicensed clinicians
  • Demonstrated ability to perform brief therapy especially as it pertains to the developmental needs of college aged individuals
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and competence in addressing the needs of diverse clients
  • Knowledge of and experience with mental health models and policies/procedures related to the field of psychology
  • Knowledge or familiarity of psychological assessment
  • Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated ability to make effective oral presentation, facilitate an open exchange of ideas, and write clear and concise clinical case notes, documents and reports
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with and respond to multiple constituencies and collaborate effectively with other on- and off-campus departments and partners
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions, exercise sound clinical judgment, multi-task and set priorities
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in counseling people from diverse backgrounds and identities, including ethnicity/race, gender, sexual preference, disabilities, religion, socio-economic status, age, and others with a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.

Supplemental Information
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Licensure as a mental health professional in the state of California (i.e. licensed psychologist, LMFT, LCSW, LPCC)
  • Bilingual or multilingual Spanish Speaking
  • Experience in alcohol/substance use assessment, treatment and referral.
  • Two or more years full-time experience working in a University and/or College Counseling Center
  • Completion of an MFT (accredited) or an APA-accredited doctoral program and an APA-approved pre-doctoral internship
  • Demonstrable respect for diversity and an ability to effectively work from a cross-cultural perspective with people from a wide range of backgrounds and value systems
  • Experience with crisis intervention and trauma response debriefing capabilities
  • Significant knowledge of and experience making discerning judgments regarding complex ethical and legal issues
  • Previous university counseling center experience or the equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in intern training and supervision.
