Augustana College — Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, English

English – Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a Tenure-Track position in African-American literature and Creative Writing at the Assistant Professor rank beginning in August of the 2019-2020 academic year. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus. Rock Island, Illinois, is part of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents, located about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.

Our department seeks a scholar-writer who will continue our 50-year tradition of teaching African-American literature and will contribute to our rapidly expanding Creative Writing major. PhD preferred; MFA with experience and/or publication record strongly considered. We look for proven expertise and/or experience in either African-American studies or creative writing (any genre), and demonstrated ability to teach courses in the other area. Projected load is six courses per year, with a two-course pre-tenure leave in year three. Courses taught will include introductory and advanced African-American literature courses, small-group creative writing seminars, and opportunities to create and teach J-Term courses, study away courses, and interdisciplinary courses in Augustana’s innovative first-year inquiry program. Creative and scholarly activity valued and research grants, travel support, pre-tenure paid leaves, and post-tenure sabbaticals available. Service to the college and the department is expected. Bright, motivated, students, 25% of whom are non-white and trending toward greater diversity.
