Description of Responsibilities: The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is the intellectual and institutional leader of a college with more than 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students, more than 200 full-time faculty, and by far the largest division of an institution that also includes schools of Business, Education, and Communication, Media and the Arts. 

The Dean serves as the administrative officer leading the work of CLAS, its programs and faculty. The Dean uses their judgement and experience in setting direction for the College, determining and recommending priorities for the College and how to allocate resources within the College. The Dean leads the CLAS faculty, representing their accomplishments and aspirations and assuring critical information regarding the success of the faculty and students are communicated within and outside of Academic Affairs. The Dean also communicates goals, concerns and needs of the larger SUNY Oswego community to the College.  Responsible for more than 40 academic programs, the Dean supports and cultivates the faculty and other resources required for the successful implementation of those programs.  The Dean is attentive and committed to faculty and student diversity, shared governance and the increasingly complex and extramural roles the liberal arts and sciences are called upon to engage in communities, local and global. The Dean reports directly to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and serves as an important part of the Academic Affairs leadership team, as well as a member of the President’s expanded cabinet. The Dean must work collaboratively with other divisions throughout SUNY Oswego. The Dean will also work with various external constituencies. SUNY Oswego prides itself on its continued ability to innovate. The CLAS Dean is expected to contribute a demonstrated record of creative thinking, foresight, and adaptive management.

Responsibilities include: supporting faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation; overseeing programs within CLAS; working with chairs and faculty to improve existing programs and develop new programs; developing and supporting initiatives designed to build and strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations within the College and across the University; providing leadership in external relations, partnership building, fund-raising, and fiscal management.

In addition, the Dean, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

  • A terminal degree and record of academic accomplishments that qualifies the candidate for the rank of full professor in a department or interdisciplinary program of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Administrative experience at the level of department chair or beyond that includes supervision of staff, personnel evaluations, program assessment, budget management, and collaboration with other units.

  • A demonstrated commitment to innovative program development that supports student success and learning and promotes SUNY Oswego’s strengths and strategic goals in these areas. 
  • Independent vision and the leadership skills necessary to create consensus around that vision.
  • A willingness and ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other institutional organizations while vigorously advancing the aims of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • A commitment to extending and enhancing relations between the College and the community, the College and its alumni, the College and the world.

Description of the College:  The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences houses programs in the humanities, sciences, and social science.  Its faculty members are committed teachers and scholars who work with their students to solve problems and arrive at insights by looking across disciplinary boundaries, working on cutting-edge research, and using technology to connect globally.  The College includes 16 academic departments that offer more than 50 degrees and certifications.  Approximately 20 percent of CLAS degree programs are interdisciplinary or multi-disciplinary.  Disciplines range from Anthropology to Zoology. CLAS has seen significant growth in its STEM programs. Its relatively new programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Software Engineering are currently seeking ABET accreditation. New programs have been developed in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics and a graduate program in Biomedical and Health Informatics. The College has been pursuing and growing efforts in the Digital Humanities and implemented a Humanities Collaboratory recently to encourage interdisciplinary and problem-solving teaching and research.  The College is also the primary provider of general education and is deeply involved with the School of Education in providing content area education for teacher candidates.
