Description of Responsibilities: The Assistant Professor of Mathematics will teach a broad range of undergraduate mathematics courses, including mathematics courses intended for future teachers at both secondary and elementary levels. Additional expectations include holding office hours, advising majors, working with undergraduates on capstone projects, and participating in committee work appropriate to experience.  Active participation in the life of the department and the college is expected, as is a program of active contributions in the profession. These contributions include publications, grant work, presentations, and work in professional organizations. The standard teaching load is 12 hours a week.

In addition, the Assistant Professor of Mathematics will demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship, commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and the communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, or Mathematics Education or a related field (with significant graduate coursework in Mathematics, preferably a Master’s Degree), by the time of appointment
  • Teaching experience at the college-level as a full-time or part-time instructor, or as a graduate teaching assistant
  • A commitment to working with students of diverse backgrounds

Description of Department:  We are a collegial department of 22 full-time faculty, offering a BA in Mathematics and BS in Applied Mathematics; a joint program BS in Applied Mathematical Economics; minors in Applied Statistics and in Mathematics; concentrations for future elementary and secondary teachers; and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree jointly hosted by the School of Education. Work has begun on a major in Statistics. About 18 majors graduate each year, in addition to graduates in secondary mathematics education: each graduate completes a capstone experience. We are dedicated to engaging teaching and to high standards in all of our courses. Faculty are expected to work closely with students and to stay active in the profession.
