Founded in 1923, Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) is a public university located in Nacogdoches, Texas, and is one of four independent public universities in Texas. Though the university is located in the rural east Texas college town of Nacogdoches, the vast majority of SFA students come from the greater Houston or Dallas-Fort Worth areas. SFA has also served students from 46 states outside Texas and 42 countries outside the United States. SFA enrolls nearly 13,000 students, offering more than 120 areas of study, including more than 80 undergraduate majors, nearly 60 graduate degrees, and three doctoral programs through its six colleges. The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks are members of the Southland Conference and compete in Division I for all varsity sports. 

Reporting to the Vice President for University Affairs, the Chief of Police directs the administration, planning, and organization of the Department of Public Safety including the university police, emergency management and crisis response, and parking and traffic. The Chief of Police collaborates with key university administrators and provides strategic leadership and direction to all law enforcement, security, and public safety aspects of the university’s units, operations, policies, objectives, and initiatives; develops, revises, interprets, explains, and ensures compliance with university policies and procedures consistent with local, state, and federal laws, statutes, codes, and regulations; and develops and implements effective crime prevention strategies. In addition, the Chief of Police oversees, assesses, and responds to critical campus law enforcement, public safety, and security concerns, issues, and situations; and ensures that appropriate threat assessment/management and risk mitigation measures are in place. The Department of Public Safety has a staff of 46 including 27 sworn officers.

A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field and ten years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, including supervisory experience in an administrative or management position at the rank of Police Lieutenant (or the equivalent) are required. A master’s degree and law enforcement experience working in a higher education environment are preferred. The successful candidate must have, or be eligible to obtain, a Texas Peace Officer License and Master Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). The required license(s) and certification must be obtained no later than six months following the date of the appointment.
