HPU is committed to serving the local and global communities and challenges its students to acquire the knowledge, skills and experiences that foster critical thinking, effective communication skills and an understanding of the workings of an increasingly interconnected world. HPU’s curriculum, which builds on its diversity by combining American educational traditions with global perspectives, stresses rigorous intellectual engagement, relevant career education and social responsibility. HPU has become well known over the past five decades as one of the most diverse higher education institutions in the nation, with students from all 50 U.S. states and 65 countries. Located halfway between North America and Asia, HPU is set in a thriving metropolis, an island of roughly 1 million residents with significant populations from across the globe. In addition to its inherent demographic diversity, Honolulu is visited by more than 4.4 million guests each year from around the world, creating a culturally rich, international environment throughout the island of Oʻahu. The diversity of HPU’s student body is a unique asset that stimulates learning about other cultures firsthand, both inside and outside of the classroom. There is no majority population at HPU. Students are encouraged to examine the values, customs, traditions, and principles of others to gain a clearer understanding of their own perspectives. HPU students develop friendships with students from throughout the United States and the world, and form important connections for success in the global economy of the twenty-first century.
