Basic Function:
Faculty/Chair Position, Department of Learning & Teaching

The Graduate School of Education at California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) invites applicants for a tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor of Education and department chair beginning in fall of 2019. Cal Lutheran has recently become a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and we are looking for candidates with a demonstrated commitment to and success working in diverse, multicultural and multiracial communities. The campus is located midway between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, and is home to 2,810 undergraduate and 1,316 graduate students who come from more than 61 countries and represent a variety of faiths. 49.8% of Cal Lutheran students are international students or from underrepresented groups, and over 42% of freshmen are first generation students.

The Department of Learning & Teaching offers credential programs in Multiple Subjects (elementary), Single Subjects (secondary), and Educational Specialists (Mild to Moderate, Moderate to Severe, and Deaf and Hard of Hearing). Common responsibilities for the position include teaching in the programs, student advisement, and service to the university and broader community. The chair responsibilities will include departmental oversight, scheduling, faculty and staff development, and outreach to the community. The chair position will be for a three-year term (with the potential for renewing) and will require summer duties as assigned.

Faculty Responsibilities

  • Carry a 12-unit course load per semester with one 3-unit course release for department chair administrative duties
  • Integrate current and emerging instructional delivery technologies into the learning process across classroom and online settings
  • Engage in scholarly activities leading to grants, presentations, and/or publications
  • Participate in service to the department, school, university, and P-22 (i.e., preschool through higher education) community
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional excellence and continuous growth within the subject, field or discipline

    Chair Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of the department
  • Provide oversight for all departmental degree and credential programs
  • Develop schedule of course offerings
  • Hire and manage adjunct faculty
  • Review and approve syllabi
  • Provide oversight of fieldwork coordinator
  • Review and approve new student applications
  • Assure California Commission for Teacher Credentialing Compliance
  • Facilitate Department Meetings

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of an appropriate earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in education, education leadership, or a related field
  • P-12 teaching experience
  • At the Associate level, or a minimum of five years of full-time teaching at the rank of assistant professor, or equivalent experience

    Desired Qualifications

  • K-12 teaching experience in one of the following areas: special education, mathematics, or science
  • Knowledge of and experience with local, state and national educational issues and trends across the P-22 pipeline
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity
  • understanding of the diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, and ethnic background of university students

  • Successful experience and background in department and/or university leadership
  • Experience in the effective use of technology in educational practice
  • Successful involvement with university-public school partnerships
  • Pedagogical experience with hybrid or online teaching strategies
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Evidence of sustained teaching effectiveness, research and scholarship

    Representative Duties:
    • Provide academic instruction to students through lecture, lab, or performance courses. Create assignments and activities in one-on-one, classroom, and distance mediated instructional settings for development of cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher order thinking skills among students. E
    • Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide feedback in a timely manner to student inquiries in class, online, or during established consultation office hours. E
    • Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, course curriculum; prepare and submit grades, data, and reports related to course and student progress in a timely manner. E
    • Provide a course syllabus to students in each class within the first week of the class, as outlined in the faculty handbook. E
    • Adhere to the responsibilities related to teaching, advising and service, as outlined in the faculty handbook. E
    • Attend and participate on committees and in department, division, campus, and University meetings. E
    • Complete assigned administrative duties including, but not limited to, scheduling, faculty evaluations, and curriculum development. E
    • Performs related duties as assigned.

    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing using tact, patience, and courtesy

    • Demonstrate commitment to professional excellence and continuous growth within subject field or discipline

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • An earned doctorate
    • Record of successful K-12 teaching
    • Record of successful university teaching
    • Evidence of a clear program of research and scholarship
    • Five years of experience in higher education
    • Record of successful leadership experience in higher education
    • Ability to articulate and bridge the essential relationships between special education and general education
    • Experience working with cultural and linguistically diverse populations of students

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
    • Experience with accreditation and program assessment
    • Evidence of successful university-school partnerships
    • Experience with online and hybrid course delivery
    • Ability to secure external funding
    • Successfully achieved tenure and promotion to associate professor at a previous institution
