In Memoriam: P. Sterling Stuckey, 1932-2018

Sterling Stuckey, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of history at the University of California, Riverside died on August 15 in California. He was 86 years old.

Professor Stuckey was an expert on American slavery and African American history. He was the author of several books including Slave Culture: Nationalist Theory & the Foundations of Black America (Oxford University Press, 1987) and Going Through the Storm: The Influence of African American Art in History (Oxford University Press, 1994).

Stuckey joined the faculty at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1971 and was promoted to full professor in 1977. He joined the faculty at the University of California, Riverside in 1989 and taught there until his retirement in 2004.

Dr. Stuckey held bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in history from Northwestern University.
