Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. We seek a collaborative, strategic, results-oriented leader who values excellence and will guide our efforts around diversity, inclusion, and equity as evidenced by our commitment to Inclusive Excellence. The successful candidate will be able to foster a campus culture of respect and openness to change, as well as, will align and integrate diversity and inclusion efforts with a range of existing and new campus initiatives. The incumbent will serve as the Colleges’ diversity strategist responsible for building consensus and effectuating change to integrate diversity and inclusion into the Colleges’ campus climate, strategic goals, academic programs and co-curricular experiences and various initiatives and policies.

The Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion (also knows as the Chief Diversity Officer, or CDO) will provide vision and leadership to develop and implement campus initiatives and efforts to advance a culture of respect and openness that embraces and supports diversity and inclusion. Reporting to the President and serving on the Senior Staff, the CDO will work collaboratively with relevant HWS stakeholders to proactively address campus climate and demographics through policies, programs, and outreach materials.

Guided in part by the 2016 Strategic Diversity Plan, the CDO will be responsible for efforts to conceptualize diversity as an institutional imperative and educational resource; to prioritize equity and inclusion in strategic development, long-range planning, and partnership development opportunities; and to build effective relationships across campus so as to ensure that every member of the HWS community has an equal opportunity to thrive.

The CDO will work with the members of the campus community to:

  • Develop a shared vision of diversity, inclusion, and equity and serve as the primary lead on projects to accomplish that vision.
  • Serve as a leader and partner for campus-wide initiatives that implement the 2016-17 Strategic Diversity Plan and relevant aspects of the 2015 Culture of Respect Report.
  • Assess the Colleges’ needs related to equity in diversity and inclusive excellence and measure effectiveness of programs and activities related to diversity and inclusion.
  • Manage and/or oversee diversity programs and services at the institution that develop an understanding of inclusion and diversity amongst students, faculty, and staff.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to create and provide educational opportunities to engage diverse populations and ideas inside and outside the classroom, as well as, to design and implement diversity and inclusion training for faculty and staff.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to support diversity recruitment plans for faculty and staff that address advertising, networking, recruitment outreach activities, and other techniques for increasing and retaining the number of candidates from underrepresented groups.
  • Develop, support, and encourage evidence-based programs and services that emphasize the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive campus environment.
  • Create the infrastructure and foundation for and lead an Office of Diversity and Inclusion to address the duties and charge of the CDO.
  • Plan, guide, and advise the President, members of the Senior Staff, and members of the Board of Trustees on diversity, equity, and inclusion at the Colleges.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

A strong command of contemporary concepts and issues around diversity and inclusion and a demonstrated record of success in working with diverse populations are required. A Master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education in the field of Higher Education Administration, Human Resource Management, Organizational Psychology or Sociology, or related field, or a combination of education and work experience deemed equivalent is required.

Progressive leadership experience in higher education designing and leading efforts related to institutional diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism and access to educational and employment equity is highly desired. The ideal candidate will also have a strong background in developing institutional practices and data-driven strategies for identifying and achieving institutional goals. The candidate will also have excellent communication skills including the ability to facilitate difficult conversations, effectively listen to all points of view, build consensus, and inform others of policy decisions.

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible administrative position. Normal hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year. Additional hours, particularly after 5:00 p.m. will be required. This position description is not all-inclusive as additional tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
