The School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) invites applications and nominations for the position of chair of the Department of Biochemistry. The department has a long history of success, and has been led by notable scientists. The institution seeks an outstanding scientist with the skills and vision necessary for developing and strengthening an innovative research program that integrates basic biochemical research with other School of Medicine (SOM) and university departments, as well as affiliate hospital programs. Undergraduate training and course offerings, and graduate program contribute to the strong educational mission advanced by the department. The SOM expects that the department will solidify and expand links to major centers of the school including the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Center for RNA Science and Therapeutics, and the Departments of Pharmacology and Physiology and Biophysics to mention a few. The school recognizes opportunities in metabolism linked to these disciplines as a priority for the department. The new chair will be supported by a competitive recruitment package that includes substantial support for additional faculty recruitments to the department.

The campus at CWRU encourages and facilitates collaborative interactions among scientists in the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, Dentistry, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Beyond the core campus, the School of Medicine serves as a hub for educational initiatives and research programs with School of Medicine faculty based at our four affiliated hospitals: University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic (including the Lerner Research Institute and the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine), MetroHealth Medical Center, and the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center.

The new chair will be expected to capitalize on these resources to build cross institutional collaborative research and education programs. The research mission is supported by excellent core facilities that include: high-throughput drug screening, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, induced pluripotent stem cell production, transgenic animal model development, behavioral testing, human and small animal imaging, super-resolution light microscopy, flow cytometry, structural biology, cryo-EM, and bioinformatics pipelines that support efficient data analysis.

Applicants for this position must have an M.D. or Ph.D. degree with a distinguished record of scientific achievement, demonstrated leadership skills, and a commitment to the education and mentorship of both students and faculty. Appointment as a Professor of Biochemistry with tenure is anticipated and requires evidence of a productive and excellent research program recognized at the national/international level by peer review and recommendations. The Leonard Skeggs Professorship has been reserved for the successful applicant. The capacity for imaginative programming and a vigorous collaborative spirit are also essential characteristics.
