  • Provide strategic direction for public relations by managing the public relations team to ensure message is consistent, timely, relevant, and aligned with the College’s vision, mission, and goals.
  • Proactively seeks media coverage at the local, regional and national level through news releases, media pitches, developing and implementing public relations plans and building relationships with key media.
  • Provide communication counsel to the College community and create communication plans for College events or happenings that align with overall College and marketing goals.
  • Facilitate internal communications with students, faculty and staff, overseeing the internal employee blog, The Watercooler.
  • Manage content for quarterly e-newsletter, Community Connection.
  • Serve as editor for 8-page monthly Houston Chronicle insert, Opportunity News; and for the College’s magazine, CareerFocus.
  • Proofread and edit all news releases, publications, and graphic design projects.
  • Drive the day-to-day writing of news releases, marketing and advertising materials copy, and brochures to ensure the writing meets College and Associated Press Style standards.
  • Serve as the deputy Public Information Officer in the event of a College crisis.
  • Attend College and campus meetings, and serve on committees and/or task forces as assigned, on behalf of the marketing, public relations and government affairs department.
  • Attend advertising radio events, programs, and other public relations events as needed.
  • Attend external College events as needed some may be required after hours.


  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or related field.
  • Five (5) years in writing and public relations.
  • Five (5) years in a leadership / supervisory role.


  • Master’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related field.
  • Seven – ten (7-10) years in writing and public relations.
  • Five (5) years in a supervisory role.

Preferred Licenses/Certifications:

  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) Certifications (100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800, PIO/JIC Training)

Salary Grade: 30

Salary is based on the Board-approved salary schedule for the current fiscal year. See Salary Schedule
