Eight African Americans Who Are Taking on New Administrative Duties in Higher Education

Tonya Strong-Charles was appointed executive director for media relations at Syracuse University in New York. She has been serving as executive director of media relations at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. Earlier, she was an Emmy Award-winning journalist for a television station in Cleveland.

Strong-Charles holds a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. She is currently studying for a master’s degree in nonprofit administration at John Carroll University.

Jeffrey L. Alston was named director of career services at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. Since 2014, he has served as associate director of employer relations and internships at the University at Brockport of the State University of New York System. Earlier, he was director of human resources for the Baltimore Convention Center.

Dr. Alston is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. He earned an MBA at Morgan State University in Baltimore and an educational doctorate in student affairs from the University of Rochester in New York.

Shaneil Ealy was promoted to associate vice president in the Division of Outreach and Community Engagement at the University of Central Arkansas. She was worked in the division for the past 15 years, most recently as assistant vice president.

Dr. Ealy is a graduate of the University of Arkansas. She earned an MBA at the University of Central Arkansas and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Troy Miller was appointed associate vice provost and director of admissions at the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York System. He has been serving as assistant vice president for enrollment management at Bowie State University in Maryland. Earlier, he was associate vice president for enrollment management at Coppin State University in Baltimore.

Miller is a graduate of Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina, where he majored in management. He holds a master’s degree in human resource management from the New York Institute of Technology and is studying for an educational doctorate from Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Ernie Troy Hughes was named vice president for university advancement at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. He has been operating his own management consulting firm in Marietta, Georgia.

Dr. Hughes holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and logistics and an MBA from Mississippi State University. He earned a Ph.D. in human resource development from Louisiana State University.

Vaniethia Hubbard was appointed vice president of student services at Santa Ana College in California. Since 2008, she has been dean of instruction and student services for continuing education for the North Orange County Community College District in California.

Dr. Hubbard holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and an educational doctorate from California State University, Fullerton. She also earned a master of social work degree from Clark Atlanta University.

Nicole Hudson was named assistant vice chancellor for the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion at Washington University in St. Louis. She was deputy mayor for racial equity and priority initiatives for the City of St. Louis.

Hudson is a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she majored in communications.

Jason J. Dorsette is the inaugural director for the Office of Advancing Academic Equity for Student Success at Oregon State University. He was the director of diversity and cultural engagement at the university.

Dorsette holds a bachelor’s degree in history and education and a master of public policy and administration degree from North Carolina Central University. He is currently a Ph.D. student in the College of Education Language, Equity, and Educational Policy program at Oregon State University.
