Description of Responsibilities: As a critical member of the Distance Learning Team, the Instructional Designer collaborates with and advises faculty in development and revision for online, blended and web-enhanced courses, modules and instructional assets. Will consult with faculty in the design of appropriate online instructional strategies to ensure alignment of assets and assessments with course learning outcomes, monitors course development progress and course delivery and assists with problem solving. 

The Instructional Designer reports to the Senior Instructional Designer, and works in tandem with other Instructional Designers and Distance Learning Team staff in the Division of Extended Learning, Campus Technology Services and Penfield Library to ensure a seamless and comprehensive support model for faculty and students engaged in online and hybrid course development and delivery. 

Additionally, will conduct workshops and assist faculty individually and in groups for course design and management, promoting best practices in online teaching and learning, and remain current with emerging technologies, new products methodologies and pedagogy. The Instructional Designer will also communicate, design and implement training resources to enhance Oswego’s technology based learning initiatives. Duties also include engagement in professional networks on campus, within SUNY and nationally. This is a full time position based in Oswego NY with some regional travel and evening/ weekend work as required

In addition, will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional systems, education, adult education, educational technology or related field at time of application
  • 3 years professional work experience in higher education, public education or corporate training
  • Experience with learning management systems
  • Expertise in managing multiple projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated skill in written, oral and interpersonal communication
  • Teaching training or staff development experience
  • Ability to travel and work evening and weekends as required

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • An earned Master’s degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, Educational technology, adult education or education 
  • 5 years of experience in instructional design, distance learning or corporate training
  • Prior experience with Blackboard Learn 9.1 (or higher)
  • Familiarity with Section 508 Accessibility standards and Universal Design for Learning principles
  • Experience with other tools to support online learning such as web conferencing, multimedia applications such as podcasting and authoring tools for instructional purposes
  • Familiarity of course quality metrics such as Quality Matters or OSCQR
  • Previous experience teaching or learning online
  • Knowledge of principles of best practice related to online learning and teaching
  • Demonstrated ability to support and troubleshoot software problems
  • Experience in Higher Education

Description of Department:  The mission of the Division of Extended Learning is to expand access to the SUNY Oswego experience through the creation, delivery and support of innovative and responsive credit and non-credit programming for diverse audiences via multiple locations, modalities and services. We cultivate collaborative partnerships and provide superior customer service to ensure high quality, lifelong learning opportunities. The office coordinates offering of a variety of credit bearing and non-credit bearing courses and programs for both nontraditional and traditional students at the Syracuse Branch Campus, Online, during Summer and Winter terms and at offsite locations. The Extended Learning Division is the home to the SUNY Oswego in the High Schools and Oswego County New Visions programs where eligible high school students are able to concurrently enroll in SUNY Oswego courses for college credit. Extended Learning also coordinates the offering of an “Intensive English” program each summer for students from around the world and English for Academic Purposes courses during traditional semesters. Professional development programs are available by contract, on site, or online. The Division is proud to have received numerous Veteran Friendly designations and provides services to active duty military and veterans online and face to face as a partner at the Jefferson Higher Education Center in Watertown, on Fort Drum and on main campus. We also provide services such as Testing and Proctoring, International Student Services, Non-Traditional Student Services and Room Rental at our Syracuse branch campus.
