The New School — Associate Vice President for Student Success

This position provides senior-level strategic administrative support to the Senior Vice President for Student Success. The incumbent serves as an integral part of the Student Success Senior Leadership team. This position works closely with all entities of the Student Success organization and other University areas to ensure best practices are utilized within Student Success. This position must be able to articulate concerns of varying nature to the Senior Vice President. The Incumbent also works closely with the leadership of Student Success, Human Resources, Budget and Finance, Institutional Research, General Counsel and other departments as necessary.


  • Direct oversight for the operational areas of Student Success including, Student Engagement, Strategic Planning and Assessment, Operational Effectiveness and Student Success Data/Retention.
  • Supervises leadership staff including, Assistant VP for Campus and Student Engagement and Senior Director for Operational Effectiveness, Planning and Assessment.
  • Serve as the central point of coordination for strategic planning, policy development, financial management, and assessment initiatives for Student Success.
  • Manages and oversight for Student Success including:
    • Work with the SVP for Student Success to identify, develop and implement operational business plans, monitor key metrics and assist in the decision making for Student Success.
    • Assist with the annual preparation of new budgets as they relate to Strategic Planning initiatives
    • Identify and seize opportunities to improve operational performance of Student Success.
  • Participates in Student Success strategic planning ensuring that developed goals align with the University’s goals and contribute toward growth & enhancement of services.
  • Set a tone of leadership that is student-centered, collaborative and focuses on data based decision-making.
  • Collaborate with the various functional areas on campus to address issues of mutual concern across the departments and schools.
  • Provide data, reports, analyses and confidential support to the Senior Vice President.
  • Act as a liaison to campus and community constituents on issues that may be sensitive in nature.
  • Attend various campus committee meetings.
  • Represents SVP in her absence, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree with 7 -10 years of experience in higher education within student affairs/success, student engagement, or a relevant field.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate self and others.
  • Analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to anticipate future outcomes of proposed actions and recommend changes as required.
  • Experience in personnel management to include hiring, supervising, and coaching employees.
  • Experience providing leadership and direction in programmatic, budgetary, and operational functions.
  • Organizational skills to set goals, prioritize assignments, monitor performance, and exceed set deadlines.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with experience creating and delivering presentations to small and large diverse groups.
  • Ability to develop innovative approaches, techniques and procedures to provide more efficient services.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking based upon in-depth data, substantiating information, considering and respecting others’ input personal values, and ethics.
  • Ability to strategically plan and serve as a catalyst for organizational change, cultivate a shared vision with others, and motivate others to transfer vision into action.
