Howard University — Director of Financial Aid, Office of Student Financial Services

The purpose of this position is to oversee all administrative functions related to financial aid services for students, including student loans, financial aid, scholarships and student employment.

Direct supervision of Deputy Director, Associate Director for Financial Aid, Associate Director of Systems and Loan Operations, Associate Director of Scholarships, State Aid and Athletics, and the Office Administrator. Responsible for executive oversight of 30+ member Student Financial Services team. Makes recommendations and decisions in the areas of compensation, staff selection, disciplinary actions, complaints, staff performance appraisal and similar supervisory duties. Strategically plans, assigns, and evaluates the work of subordinates for effective operation and results of the unit.

Internal contacts include students, faculty and staff. External contacts include families, prospective students, student advocates, and representatives of government agencies, lending institutions, guarantee agencies, community organizations, legislative representatives, and the general public.


  • Provides administrative oversight for student-facing services related to student finance, including strategic planning.
  • Lead administrative functions and communications related to Student Financial Aid Services activities.
  • Collect, analyze and distribute data to key stakeholders for reporting (internal and external), decision-making and compliance.
  • Act as partner with academic enterprise to advise of strategic enrollment initiatives.
  • Responsible for Institutional Data Reporting on Enrollment and all other institutional external data survey requests as designated.
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationship with the Offices of Bursar, Admission, Records, Enterprise Technology Services and International Student Services to develop, implement and manage processes that improve the overall effectiveness and success of Enrollment Management.
  • Reviews and plans annual operating budget for Student Financial Aid Services.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of student service delivery of the Office of Student Financial Aid Services through performance metrics in accordance with institutional goals.
  • Maintains policies and procedures for all Student Financial Aid Services functions, in accordance with federal, state and institutional record retention guidelines and makes recommendations and decision related policy changes and implementation.
  • Monitor activities that directly impact Student Financial Aid Services, to identify and determine challenges or opportunities for improved customer service.
  • Meets with students, parents, faculty, staff and senior-level administrators regarding student financial aid related matters.
  • Responds verbally and in writing to inquiries regarding service delivery, audits, administrative functions and daily operations of Student Financial Aid Services.
  • Assists with University’s retention efforts through strategic assessment of student financing.
  • Create and conduct internal programs to assist with talent management of Student Financial Aid Services teams.
  • Serve as key member of the University’s Tuition and Rates Advisory Committee (TRAC).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Expert knowledge of financial aid program legislation as well as internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Experience with an automated financial system.
  • Skill in the operation of computers, related software applications and standard office equipment, in a timely, accurate and efficient manner.
  • Competence in both oral and written English.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious and effective work relations with students, staff, faculty, and the general public.

Ten years of progressively responsible administrative work and supervisory experience which includes student financial services functions. Master’s degree preferred.
Knowledge of Ellucians Banner Financial Aid software.
