Alcorn State University Ranks First Among HBCUs in Student Experience Rankings

Another group has now issued its rankings of the Best Historically Black Colleges and Universities. College Consensus combines the rankings of several other organizations to construct what it calls a “meta-ranking.” Another component in the College Consensus rankings is a student satisfaction rating complied by reviews on websites such as Niche, May Plan, and Unigo.

According to their website, the “College Consensus method combines information from many rankings and reviews, all of which are based on their own unique methodologies; with that approach, College Consensus show prospective students a big-picture view of the higher education landscape. With the Consensus method, the biases of other rankings are filtered out, leaving a picture of the institutions with the strongest academics, strongest student support and community, and strongest outcomes.”

As in many other HBCUs rankings, Spelman College in Atlanta comes out on top in the College Consensus rankings. Xavier University in New Orleans is in the second spot followed by Hampton University in Virginia in third place. Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Morehouse college in Atlanta round out the top five.

What might be a surprise to some readers is that Alcorn State University in Mississippi finished with the highest student satisfaction rating of any HBCU in the country. This pushed Alcorn State to seventh overall on the Best HBCUs list compiled by College Consensus.

Emanuel Barnes, vice president for student affairs at Alcorn State University, stated that “this is a collective achievement for the whole campus community – students, faculty and staff. The fact that the university is ranked number seven overall and number one in student consensus shows that, on whatever measures are used, Alcorn delivers an outstanding learning, teaching and student experience.”
