University of Pennsylvania — Director, Residential Services

The University of Pennsylvania (commonly known as Penn or UPenn) is a private Ivy League research university located in the University City section of Philadelphia. Incorporated as The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn is one of 14 founding members of the Association of American Universities and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. Penn has a total enrollment of 21,600 with 10,500 of those students being undergraduates.

Reporting to the Executive Director for Business Services, the Director, Residential Services will lead the administrative, management, and service facets of on-campus student housing in support of Penn’s academic mission. The Director manages residential facilities, customer service, and administrative processes in support of approximately 5,700 undergraduate students residing in the university’s 12 College Houses, as well as an Off-Campus Services education/referral program, and a graduate housing program of 500 residents. The residential operation is 7 days per week, 24 hours per day, including all University-recognized holidays. Residential Services is part of the Residential & Hospitality Services (RHS) team, which is comprised of residential, dining, conference, and off-campus services, and associated service contract management. The Director will lead and manage the Residential Services department with 28 full-time staff, roughly 200 student employees while providing leadership and direction in occupancy planning, capital projects, and management of the department’s $60 million annual operating budget.

A master’s degree in higher education or related field is required. A minimum of seven to ten years of progressive responsibilities in college and university housing management and administration is required. Further requirements include demonstrated knowledge of organizational, managerial, budgetary, and financial management skills; successful experience in the use of technology to provide and receive services; familiarity with student housing management systems, particularly StarRez, will be a plus. Additional qualifications include an ability to interpret, analyze, and evaluate complex maintenance, budget planning, and property management issues; excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated leadership and strategic planning skills; experience leading and supervising a diverse group of both professional and student employees; and capable of working collegially with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
