Description of Responsibilities:
The Academic Planning Counselor will:

  • Provide academic advisement caseload management
  • Provide instruction for first year seminar and peer leader training programs
  • Develop specialized programs specific to the needs of EOP students
  • Provide services and programs related to the pre-first year EOP summer program
  • Collaborate with departments within the divisions of Academic and Student Affairs

In addition, will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree by time of appointment
  • Professional experience with EOP, HEOP, TRIO or other Opportunity programs (includes graduate assistantship or fellowship experience)
  • Participation in student retention and persistence initiatives
  • Demonstrated involvement with student program development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Teaching, or related field
  • Experience in data collection and assessment 
  • Experience in academic summer enrichment programs such as EOP, HEOP, TRIO, and/or CSTEP
  • Involvement on campus wide committees and/or task forces
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Degree Works, Starfish Early Alert and Banner systems

Description of Department: The purpose of the Educational Opportunity Program is to fulfill New York State’s commitment to provide access to higher education for economically disadvantaged students who possessed the potential to succeed in college, but whose academic preparation in high school has not fully prepared them to pursue college education successfully.  The primary mission of the EOP is to facilitate the recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation of these students.  This is accomplished by providing EOP students with an array of educationally related support services and opportunities.  Applicants for EOP consideration must also be financially eligible for the program according to the New York State EOP financial eligibility guidelines.
