Department Summary:
The Academic Achievement Center (AAC) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University. The AAC provides academic advising and learning assistance support to undergraduate students. The AAC also houses the Office of Disability Resources and the Testing Services Center. The AAC strives to provide students with quality academic services and resources that propel them toward successful and timely degree completion.

Position Summary:
The Staff Associate, Coordinator of Academic Advising Services works in support of the Haughey First Year Advising Program and other centralized academic advising initiatives, including New Student Orientation programs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Associate Director of Advising in the Academic Achievement Center.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises undergraduate peer academic advisors.

This is an exempt, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.

Essential Duties:

  1. Responsible for coordinating all aspects for the Haughey First Year Advising Program including the design and delivery of mandatory advising workshops offered each the semester.
  2. Manages the technological needs of all advising programs offered in support of the First Year Advising Program including use of Banner, DegreeWorks, Argos Academic Reports, and other advising management systems.
  3. Responsible for coordinating the pre-registration process for New Student Orientation programs including running course placement reports, managing the academic advising sessions offered at orientation, and participating in faculty advisor and orientation leader trainings.
  4. Manages the Peer Advising Program including the recruitment, hiring and training of undergraduate students who serve as peer academic advisors in the center.
  5. Assist a roster of undergraduate students that may include first year, transfer, and probationary students with academic planning for degree completion; provide ongoing academic counseling and make referrals to appropriate resources and services on campus to support their overall success.
  6. Provide academic counseling and conduct exit interviews for students seeking withdrawal from the University.
  7. Participate in academic advising meetings and assist with the overall planning and delivery of programming.
  8. Manages the advising program external and intranet websites.
  9. Functions as a team member of the Academic Achievement Center staff in the development and implementation of processes necessary to accomplish the goals and philosophy of the department and the University.
  10. Carries out other professional tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree in student personnel, counseling or other closely related degree.
  2. At least two years of related experience is required, especially in the areas of academic advising, delivery of academic support services and/or college teaching.
  3. Experience implementing technological solutions in the delivery of academic advising services.
  4. Strong computer and analytical skills; ability to work with Microsoft office products and student information systems; evidence of problem solving skills required.
  5. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Good interpersonal skills are essential.
  6. Knowledge of higher education principles, practices, and procedures.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work in stressful situations required. Position requires sensitivity to human concerns, flexibility, patience, professional integrity and a concern for student needs in a demanding academic context.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience using the student information systems such as Banner and DegreeWorks.
