Augustana College — Vice President and Dean of Student Life

Founded in 1860, Augustana is a private, selective, residential college of the liberal arts and sciences. The 115-acre Rock Island campus is located in the Quad Cities, a diverse metropolitan area (pop. 400,000) in Illinois and Iowa, spanning a length of the Mississippi River. Augustana enrolls about 2,600 students from diverse backgrounds and awards the Bachelor of Arts in about 90 majors. The 2017-18 incoming class comprised the most diverse group in the college’s history. Newly introduced or planned academic programs include data analytics, engineering, entertainment and media industries, and a master’s in speech-language pathology. Renovations planned or recently completed include the Brunner Theatre Center; expansion of the Hanson Hall of Science; the Brodahl Building and its Center for Speech, Language, and Hearing; and walkway and landscaping upgrades to Augustana’s campus, widely recognized for its beauty. Reporting the President, The Vice President and Dean of Student Life will serve as a senior officer of the college, working closely with the President of the College, the President’s Cabinet, and faculty, staff and students to build a safe and healthy campus environment that promotes learning in all aspects of students’ lives. The dean’s areas of oversight include residential life, student activities, Greek life, varsity athletics, intramural and recreational sports, public safety/police, emergency planning, and student counseling services. The dean also takes responsibility for specific areas of student life such as withdrawal from college, disciplinary policies, non-academic accommodations, and wellness. The Dean of Students is a member of the Bias Response Team, Title IX Team, and the Academic Affairs/Student Affairs Task Force. As the primary problem-solver for issues involving students, the dean may work with faculty, department chairs, advisors, legal counsel, and others on a weekly basis. The Dean of Students will collaborate with others to create pathways that advance diversity of all kinds, and continually build an inclusive community that promotes learning and well-being for all students.

The successful candidate will possess an advanced degree (terminal degree preferred) and a minimum of eight years of successful and increasingly responsible senior-level administrative experience in a role related to student life at a college or university. In addition, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated success as a student-focused community builder; a mission-oriented leader who acts as a facilitator to enhance a positive environment for all members of the community; a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion; a partner in education who champions connections between activity and academics; and a skilled and strategic decision maker.
