University of Massachusetts Amherst — Sr. Assistant Director of Admissions

UMass Amherst, the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system, is seeking a dynamic professional to join its enrollment management diversity team. The University, which recruits prospective students both nationally and internationally, receives approximately 43,000 applications for first-year admission each year.

The Sr. Assistant Director of Admissions will be an integral member of the department’s professional staff, which is charged with recruiting, selecting, and enrolling the undergraduate first-year class. The Sr. Assistant Director will help ensure the enrollment of a talented and diverse student population. They will serve in a public-relations/informational role with prospective applicants and their families and cultivate relationships with secondary school personnel.

Required Qualifications:
Our ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the undergraduate experience at a major research university.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field at time of hire
  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience as an admissions counselor/recruiter
  • Experience supervising and mentoring people who are new to the admissions field
  • Sensitivity to multicultural and socioeconomic issues
  • Bilingual, ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Must be available and willing to work a varied schedule, including evening/weekend work and a minimum of 4-6 weeks of seasonal travel per year
  • Must have a valid driver’s license (with proof of insurability) and the ability to obtain a University credit card
  • Ability to use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in a large public research university
  • Demonstrated competency in analyzing data and translating program goals into successful operating plans
  • Experience with student information systems (preferably PeopleSoft)
