Southern University Establishes a Research Center for Philanthropy Studies

Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has announced the establishment of the Valdry Center for Philanthropy on campus. The center was made possible by gifts from Warren Valdry, his wife Virginia, and his brother Leon, all alumni of the university.

The new initiative will serve as an academically based research center focused on philanthropic studies and nonprofit management. The center aims to educate the socially conscious student, volunteer and practitioner in the emerging field of philanthropic studies through exploring the economic, historical, and philosophical rationales for voluntary action in the local, national, and international arenas.

Programming for the degree in philanthropic studies — to be awarded by Southern University’s Nelson Mandela School of Government and Social Sciences — will begin this fall. Ground was recently broken for the construction of the new center, which is expected to be completed early in 2019.
