The Associate Vice President for Human Resources (AVP) is responsible for the delivery of human resource services to Miami University’s 23,000 students, faculty and staff.

The AVP must demonstrate respect for all employees and for shared-governance processes. As an institutional leader, the AVP must respect Miami’s history, traditions and culture while challenging the University to continuously change and be more nimble.  The University must move quickly and efficiently and this requires a workforce that is capable of adapting to the University’s changing needs.

The successful AVP must bring best practices from leading-edge human capital organizations, idea generation and innovation to further the University’s goals. The AVP should be a leader who anticipates change, and recognizes impediments to executing change and can adjust the pace and timing of changes as may be needed.

It is essential that the AVP has strong managerial experience and is a decision maker who makes informed, sound decisions based on data and an understanding of the organization and its culture. To adapt successfully to the Miami culture, the AVP will need to build collaborative relationships across the University and communicate effectively with a variety of constituencies and should possess the following attributes:

This is a highly visible position and the AVP must understand and respect the requirements of working in a public university environment.

The AVP reports to the Senior Vice President for Finance & Business Services. The Office of Human Resources comprises five departments: Benefit Services, Staff Development, Compensation and Employment Services, Labor Relations, and Payroll Services.

The AVP, leading a team of 35+ and an operating budget of $3 million, is responsible for the delivery of human resources services to all administrative departments and functions, including certain services for academic departments, faculty and academic personnel (e.g., benefits). The Assistant Provost, reporting to the Provost, is responsible for faculty and academic personnel matters, such as recruitment, processing appointments, etc.

Basic Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree in business, organizational development or a related human resources field and 10 years of relevant human resources experience are required.

Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience providing the abilities, knowledge, and skills listed above may be substituted.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree and/or professional certification, extensive experience in compensation, succession planning, talent management, recruitment and experience working in higher education or public sector organizations. Evidence of leading the development and implementation of significant change initiatives in a complex organization is also preferred.
