Florida A&M University (FAMU) is seeking an energetic, innovative, collaborative, and visionary leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Science and Technology (CST). CST is strongly focused on excellence in research, instruction and service.

The Dean of CST will play a critical role in Florida A&M University’s mission of advancing knowledge, resolving complex issues, and empowering our citizens and communities. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean will:

  • Apply FAMU’s mission to the operation of CST in accordance with the FAMU Strategic Plan, “FAMU Rising),” with a focus on the strengths and needs of CST;
  • In a manner consistent with shared governance, facilitate CST departments, faculty, staff and students as they work to achieve the goals of CST and FAMU’s strategic priorities;
  • Increase external funding for the College through research and educational initiatives that promote the goals and mission of CST and FAMU;
  • Serve as the chief academic and administrative officer for all undergraduate and graduate programs in CST, including the development of new programs to address needs at the local, regional and national level;
  • Serve as an advocate for faculty and students by articulating a set of priorities that will increase research activities and innovative intra- and interdisciplinary work leading to increased extramural funding and faculty/student publications;
  • Initiate, maintain, and create programs that enhance the CST brand and help achieve the mission of CST and FAMU;
  • Create transparent and rational processes for enrollment management;
  • Maintain accreditation for all relevant CST programs;
  • Prepare and manage CST’s budget and hiring processes;
  • Facilitate professional development of faculty and staff to improve performance and morale;
  • Develop processes for strategic planning and analysis of CST operations; and
  • Engage alumni, advisory boards, and other professionals in collaborative fundraising opportunities and promotion of CST’s programs and attributes.

The ideal candidate should possess and demonstrate evidence of:

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines represented in CST (Biology, Chemistry, Computer and Information Sciences, Mathematics or Physics);
  • Distinguished teaching, research, and scholarly work appropriate to qualify the candidate for appointment as a tenured faculty member, according to the department’s criteria, at the rank of full professor;
  • Successful experience in external grant writing, fund-raising, and record of on-going publications within the candidate’s field;
  • A proven record of effective administrative experience in higher education that includes planning, faculty development, budgeting, assessment, accreditation and resource development, and online courses;
  • A record of excellence in management, decision making, problem solving, consensus building, and collaboration with others in building synergistic partnerships;
  • A record of commitment to maintaining standards of excellence, academic freedom, and supporting faculty scholarship and student learning and research;
  • A strong commitment to an inclusive community and a collective bargaining environment;
  • A knowledge of and experience with enrollment management, resource-allocation models; and
  • A knowledge of program planning in a state-funded environment.

ABOUT FAMU: Founded on October 3, 1887, Florida A&M University (FAMU) is part of the State University System of Florida and is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Distinguished by lush foliage and massive oaks, FAMU’s main campus comprises 156 buildings spread over 422 acres atop one of “the highest of Tallahassee’s seven hills.” The University also has several satellite campuses including a site in Orlando where the College of Law is located and sites in Miami, Jacksonville and Tampa for its pharmacy program. Florida A&M University offers 54 bachelor’s degrees, 29 master’s degrees, three professional degrees and 12 doctoral degrees. The three professional degrees include the Juris Doctor, Doctor of Pharmacy, and the Doctor of Physical Therapy. The 12 doctoral degree programs include 11 doctoral degrees and one Doctor of Public Health.  The doctoral degrees include the following: biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, physics, educational leadership, environmental science, and entomology.
