Virginia Tech — Assistant Professor, Movement, Performance, and Integrated Media

The School of Performing Arts (http://www.performingarts.vt.edu/) at Virginia Tech seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor with experience combining dance, movement, and/or acting performance with digital technologies. Candidates should be able to apply a range of emerging tools and platforms for movement-based live performance or experimental storytelling using a selection of media including motion capture, projection mapping, and/or computer animation. Candidates should also demonstrate creative fluency in physical aesthetics, and cultural and social vocabularies of the human form, gesture, and movement.

The successful candidate will be expected to shape courses within the tech-forward and collaborative environment of cinema, dance, and theatre, and to maintain a distinguished record of professional creative work beyond the university. Additional expectations include: teach performance-based courses in the theatre/cinema curriculum; advise and participate in the creation of new courses; supervise student projects; participate in interdisciplinary curriculum instruction and development; and create and/or collaborate in projects and productions. Contributions to Virginia Tech’s Creativity and Innovation Strategic Growth Area’s focus on immersive environments, melding the exploration of innovative technologies with the design of creative experiences, is also expected. The successful candidate must have the ability to recruit, develop, and nurture student interest, and be open to exploring collaborative endeavors with other School of Performing Arts faculty.

The School of Performing Arts is one of several programs at the university level supporting creative practice and interdisciplinary work in the arts. The School of Performing Arts includes academic programs in cinema, dance, music, and theatre and produces an extensive season of events in these fields. The School of Visual Arts includes academic programs in fine art, creative technology, art history, and visual communication design. Operating at the nexus of art, design, engineering, and science, the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) is one of seven research institutes at Virginia Tech. The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech presents performing and visual arts programs that serve the campus, students, and the broader community.

Required qualifications:

  • An MFA or equivalent professional experience
  • Record of research/creative work
  • Knowledge of, and creative experience with, dance/movement vocabularies of class, race, and gender
  • Ability to integrate multicultural perspectives into curriculum, pedagogy, and creative practices
  • Evidence of ability to work with the body in a digital performance context, including but not limited to technologies and media such as optical or inertial character motion capture and/or live dance projection mapping
  • Alignment with Virginia Tech’s vision and commitment to inclusion and diversity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of successful teaching
  • Experience in mentoring undergraduate students in creative and research activities
  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries
