University of Maryland, College Park — University Controller

The Opportunity

This position will have oversight of the policies, procedures, business processes and systems that assure the integrity of internal accounting, fiscal and business controls as well as compliance with applicable laws, policies and regulations for UMCP.

The University Controller will lead a team within the finance unit that will work competently and collaboratively to accurately record, summarize and report information in a timely, accurate, and efficient manner. The University Controller will develop and maintain the University’s financial accounting system to account for the receipt and expenditure of all funds and to report operating results in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), government regulations, and industry best practices.

The Controller will lead and facilitate innovative change, identifying ways to leverage the best use of the University’s resources while maintaining the institution’s high degree of stewardship in responsible and ethical management and accounting practices. Primary responsibilities for the Controller include:

  • Represent the University as the principal accounting officer with various constituent groups such as the University System of Maryland and the State of Maryland. Working in collaboration with UMB and other peers in the system, the University Controller will identify opportunities to improve administrative processes and systems.
  • Provide accurate, timely, and relevant information, systems and services to university leaders, business officers, and financial managers in partnership with other members of the central financial leadership team, in order to monitor and control the financial resources of the university.
  • In partnership with Executive Director of Financial Operations, evaluate and recommend financial accounting and analysis models to support executive leaders in decision-making and analysis.
  • Maintain the highest quality services on behalf of and for the university community.
  • Foster integrity, fiscal responsibility, and accountability while maximizing efficiency, accuracy, and productivity of the team.
  • Provide strategic planning, management guidance, and support to senior staff in charge of functions for accounting services, payroll services, student financial services and cashiering, business services, and accounts payable to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and other regulatory requirements with a strong focus on continual process improvement and outstanding customer service.

Candidate Profile and Qualifications

The University Controller will be a proven financial leader with progressively responsible experience related to fiscal affairs and have a successful record of financial and accounting management

Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree preferred. Minimum ten (10) years of progressively responsible leadership in relevant financial areas in a similarly complex organization(s), including experience in a central control function overseeing multiple financial and operational areas.


Extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques in higher education and/or governmental financial management practices and standards.
