University of California, Berkeley — Assistant Teaching Professor, Narrative Digital Film Production

Recruitment Period
Open November 3rd, 2017 through January 10th, 2018

Description
The Department of Film and Media at U.C. Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor (Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment) in Digital Filmmaking, with an expected start date of July 1, 2018. Applicants for this position must have met all MFA or PhD (or equivalent degree), requirements except the dissertation by the application date. An appropriate terminal degree (MFA/PhD, or equivalent) in Film, Media, or a related field must be in hand by start date.

We are seeking a candidate with an active practice, exhibition record, and recognized or growing profile as a film/videomaker. The successful candidate must also demonstrate a strong commitment to hands-on teaching of production technique as an integrated part of a liberal arts film and media studies program that teaches the critical, theoretical and aesthetic study of film and media in all of its forms, by the start date of this position. We will consider candidates from a range of specializations (including experimental, documentary, and hybrid film production), but priority will be given to those with experience in narrative filmmaking, defined in the broadest sense, who are able to teach collaborative production processes, working with writers, performers, sound designers and production crews. Experience with new directions in motion picture practice, including expanded video installation, web-based filmmaking, interactive and VR film platforms is also desirable, as are scholarship and publications in film/television/media history and critical studies. Experience teaching critical studies courses is also preferable. The successful applicant will participate in undergraduate teaching while also mentoring graduate students in the department’s Ph.D. program.

Complete applications will include a cover letter, your most recently updated C.V., an artist’s statement, a teaching statement, and links to selected streaming content of applicant’s production work, including no more than three examples. (Longer works should indicate specific selections to view). A sample of critical writing is also welcome as a supplement to the application. Additional materials may be requested at a later date. Three letters of reference should be submitted by the application deadline. All letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. All applicants are asked to refer their recommenders to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality prior to submitting their letters, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e. dossier service or career center): http://apo.berkeley.edu/evalltr.html.

The Department is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching and service. The Department is also committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents.
