Texas Southern University to Use New Technology to Identify At-Risk Students

Texas Southern University, the historically Black educational institution in Houston has entered into a partnership with the Education Advisory Board (EAB), a research and technology company based in Washington, D.C.

The university will use EAB’s Student Success Management System and Navigate software to link faculty, students, advisors, and administrators in a coordinated network aimed at enhancing student success. The technology will be used to create customized models using real-time student data to identify at-risk students. Academic advisors can then use the software to be proactive in assisting students who need special attention.

“TSU will be on the cutting edge of using predictive analytics to turn existing data into “insight” to proactively serve students,” said Wendell Williams, special assistant to the president and interim executive director of enrollment management. “Our efforts will ensure that students who are at risk of having academic problems are identified early and remain connected with advisors who can provide critical help. This intrusive advising method should have a major impact on everything from retention rates and grade-point averages, graduation rates and successful careers.”
