University of Missouri-Columbia — Assistant Vice Chancellor for Civil Rights, Title IX and ADA

The University of Missouri-Columbia (MU), a public, land-grant institution of higher education seeks a visionary leader to serve as the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Civil Rights, Title IX and ADA. This individual will be asked to lead the equity functions of the university as well as guide the campus on matters of equity, inclusion, culture and climate. While primarily executing and enforcing equity policies and compliance as the Equity Officer/Title IX Coordinator, this leader also will serve as an advisor, decision-maker, bridge builder, strategic leader and partner in engaging leaders and constituents to improve the institution’s equity and inclusion efforts.

Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (IDE), MU, the Assistant Vice Chancellor leads the team of the Office for Civil Rights, Title IX and ADA. The Assistant Vice Chancellor is a senior leader within the Division for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity. This person will supervise the staff of the Office for Civil Rights, Title IX and ADA staff (currently 12 employees) which include investigators, outreach and education coordinators, and ADA, EEO and Affirmative Action professionals committed to serving the campus and its communities.

On the campus, the University’s Assistant Vice Chancellor for Civil Rights, Title IX, and ADA impacts university policy in relation to civil rights, discrimination, sexual violence, accessibility, and institutional equity. The AVC will work collaboratively with the leadership team of the Division for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity to foster an inclusive and diverse campus environment.

As the senior equity officer, this person will coordinate the civil rights and Title IX efforts including the development, implementation, and monitoring of appropriate disclosures, policies, procedures and practices designed to comply with federal and state legislation, regulation, and case law. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will be required to oversee the institutional efforts to provide the prompt and equitable resolution of all complaints pursuant to civil rights and Title IX. Not to be lost in this portfolio is the need for the AVC to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for people with disabilities, free of physical, programmatic, informational, and attitudinal barriers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field (social work, education, policy, etc.) with 10 years of relevant experience
  • Direct supervisory experience is required.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication, planning, project management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and balance the multiple, varying and conflicting interests of diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations and matters with diplomacy and superior judgment.
  • Commitment to institutional inclusion, diversity, and equity as well as inclusive excellence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree such as a Ph.D., Ed.D., or J.D.
  • Experience in higher education administration.
  • Experience investigating or resolving discrimination grievances and the ability to manage a caseload of grievances to a prompt, effective, and equitable remedy.
