DESCRIPTION:
Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) seeks a full-time tenure track Math Instructor. The Math Learning Coordinator is a full time faculty member. The Monterey Peninsula College Mathematics Learning Center (MLC) provides drop-in tutoring for students of Monterey Peninsula College’s math program from arithmetic to pre-calculus, statistics, business calculus, finite math and math for general education, as well as providing math support to students in science classes that require these courses. This math faculty position is intended to better meet the growing needs of MPC students and provide expanded support for students in evening and online programs, as well as at the Education Center at Marina.

Full time faculty have responsibilities outside the classroom through contributions to the department, division and the college which include curriculum development, assessment, evaluation, and participation in student achievement and success. Faculty are expected to engage in campus life and become involved in college committees.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
As a full-time faculty instructor in the Math department, the successful candidate will also:
• As a Math Learning Center Coordinator:

  • Provide leadership for the Math Learning Center (MLC).
  • Direct and oversee all activities of the MLC at the Monterey campus and Marina Ed Center.
  • Use and develop a variety of effective tutoring methods to engage student interest and support a variety of learning styles.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and submit timesheets for all student tutors and other support staff.
  • Promote the MLC services to appropriate math and science students.
  • Review and revise the MLC policies practices and procedures to ensure compliance with Title 5 and the Education Code.
  • Assist students in the use of technology.
  • Provide direct math tutoring support to students in appropriate math and science courses.
  • Maintain and submit accurate attendance records according to published deadlines.
  • Implement a continuous improvement model that includes collecting and analyzing data to ensure the center is meeting student needs.
  • Create and communicate policies and procedures for proctored make-up tests in the MLC.
  • As a member of the Basic Skills Initiative Committee, engage with other instructional support programs to promote collaboration and integration of services to enhance student success and retention.

• As a math faculty member:

  • May be assigned to teach a variety of math courses.
  • Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the MPCTA Contract, and as assigned at the Monterey campus, the Education Center at Marina, and/or other designated locations. Assignments may include online, day, evening, and weekend assignments at all locations where courses are offered by Monterey Peninsula Community College District.
  • Continue professional development and remain current in the field through coursework, conferences, workshops, and other appropriate means.
  • Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
  • Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance committees and campus life activities.
  • Hold required office hours and participate in department/division meetings.
  • Participate in faculty recruitment.
  • Engage in activities that enhance the department’s rapport with area high schools, colleges and businesses.
  • Develop and assess student learning outcomes of courses and programs; participate in program review processes.
  • Participate in math schedule development process.
  • Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, census reports).
  • Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and learning objectives.
  • Use and develop a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of online resources, computers and information technology to engage student interest and support a variety of learning styles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s Degree in mathematics or applied mathematics; OR
• Bachelor’s degree in either of the above AND a Master’s degree in statistics, physics, or mathematics education;
• OR the equivalent. (Equivalency Form must be submitted for consideration)

• A sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Note: Graduate students currently working on a Master’s degree are encouraged to apply, with the understanding that the degree must be completed and confirmed by July 1, 2018.

Desirable Qualifications:
• Demonstrated ability to clearly explain concepts in the full range of math and statistics courses taught at MPC.
• Demonstrated ability to clearly explain to students how math is used in real world situations, such as science, engineering, and business.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise tutors.
• Successful administrative and/or program management experience.
• Recent successful tutoring and/or teaching experience in mathematics.
• Demonstrated ability to use a variety of mathematics and general computer software applications with proficiency.
• Ability to develop and communicate a long-term vision for the role of the MLC in supporting student success.
• Knowledge, commitment and interest in teaching/tutoring students in all levels of community college mathematics courses from arithmetic through pre-calculus, including statistics, with particular interest at the basic skills level
• Ability to work collegially with faculty and staff.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to communicate with students of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, sexual orientation and cultural backgrounds, including students with disabilities.

WORK SCHEDULE / SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Anticipated Starting Compensation
Initial salary placement is based on the current full-time salary schedule and on verification of education and experience. Starting salary is $54,118 – $73,386 annually. In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate can also earn an annual Doctoral stipend of $2,968 or an annual multiple Masters’ stipend of $2,104.

Assignment & Anticipated Start Date
The assigned work year is 175.5 days per academic year. The assignment will include 15 teaching load units (TLUs) plus five office hours per week. The selected candidate will participate in campus wide events beginning the week of August 13, 2018. Fall semester begins August 20, 2018.

Interview Process
Applicants selected for interviews will be notified by phone approximately 2 to 4 weeks following the application deadline.
