In Memoriam: Laron J. Clark Jr., 1937-2017

Laron Clark, vice president for development at Hampton University in Virginia, died on December 11. He was 80 years old.

Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey, said that “I have lost a trusted advisor and a dear, valued friend. He and I have literally traveled the nation fundraising for Hampton. Others will take on his responsibilities, but none can ever completely replace what he has meant to our Home By The Sea and to me.”

A native of Atlanta, Clark was a graduate of Morehouse College. He was hired as director of development at Hampton in 1975. In 1998, Clark was appointed vice president of institutional advancement at Morehouse. He returned to Hampton University in 2001 as vice president of development.

During Clark’s tenure at Hampton, the university’s endowment grew from $29 million to more than $260 million.
