The University of Tennessee at Martin — Director of Campus Recreation

The University of Tennessee at Martin is seeking a visionary Director to lead the strategic planning, assessment, administration and operation of a Campus Recreation program that provides programs in intramural sports, aquatics, fitness, sport clubs, informal recreation, outdoor recreation and special events for the university campus.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Direct the operation and administration of multiple facilities including the Student Recreation Center (96,000 sq. ft.), Elam Center (145,845 sq. ft.), Skyhawk Fieldhouse (72,017 sq. ft.), along with various outdoor recreation areas that includes intramural fields, 10 tennis courts, 1.5 mile fitness trail and track which serves the needs of the students, faculty, staff and guests of the University.
  2. Direct the strategic planning process for Campus Recreation: establish the vision and direction for the organization, make decisions on administrative or operational matters, lead the development and implementation of short term and long-term plans consistent with a strategic plan to ensure mission effectiveness.
  3. Direct contract negotiations that include addressing critical issues associated with facility rentals, lease agreements, membership agreements and fee proposals.
  4. Develop, review and revise policies/procedures concerning facility operation, student development, risk management, maintaining budgetary compliance and other related programs/services.
  5. Establish and manage multiple budgets.
  6. Provide supervision, leadership and mentoring to staff comprised of seven (7) full-time professionals, and over 120 student employees.
  7. Develop and implement training programs and staff evaluation materials.
  8. Plan, design, influence, implement and assess Campus Recreation programs and services.
  9. Oversee development and distribution of all programs marketing material.
  10. Continually analyze and improve programs and develop new ones by obtaining assessment data to meet the needs of the university community.
  11. Collaborate with other campus departments to create a community that fosters the opportunity for students to expand their involvement in social, cultural, recreational, and fitness activities.
  12. Develop student learning outcomes and oversee ongoing, comprehensive assessment of Campus Recreation and all related programming, education and activities.
  13. Collect, analyze, and report information to be used for university-level reports or briefings; prepares reviews and edits various annual and periodic reports and proposals as well as relevant sections of various institutional, division and department publications.
  14. Provide relative data in reference to Campus Recreation on campus that can be used for assessment and decision making.
  15. Coordinate with other university departments on issues relating to scheduling of facilities and management of special events/activities.
  16. Assist Student Affairs staff with developing division wide initiatives to enhance student learning and improve the student experience.
  17. Serve on Division, University and Community committees as assigned.
  18. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Recreation Administration, Business Administration, Sports Management, Higher Education or closely related field.
  • Five – ten years of progressive leadership/management experience directing aspects of a recreation programs or university department.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple facilities, programs, budgets, and staff.
  • Ability to conduct department wide assessment to evaluate the impact of activities on academic success and overall well-being of students.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis, human resources and risk management as it relates to recreational sports programs and services.
  • Excellent skills in conflict management techniques; skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards.
  • Knowledge of shared usage practices and priorities between facilities, programs, and services (recreation, athletics).
  • Exceptional communication skills including ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence; ability to interact effectively with many levels of personnel.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively and establish collaborative working relationships with persons from diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels within and outside the university.
  • Creative, multi-task oriented with ability to generate energy, enthusiasm and experience to the Office of Campus Recreation.

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Experience directing recreation programs in a university setting.
  • Knowledge of common policy issues affecting recreation at an institutional level.
