Two African Americans Scholars Receive Notable Honors

Shelly Haley, professor of classics and professor of Africana studies at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, received the 2017 Award for Excellence in Teaching at the College Level from the Society for Classical Studies. Professor Haley will be honored at the society’s annual meeting in Boston in January.

Professor Haley is a graduate of Syracuse University in New York. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan.

Eric A. Stewart, a professor in the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida State University, was named a fellow of the American Society of Criminology. Dr. Stewart is one of only four scholars who were named fellows of the society this year.

Professor Stewart joined the faculty at Florida State University in 2007 and was promoted to full professor in 2011. Earlier, he taught at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Georgia State University in Atlanta.  Dr. Stewart is a graduate of Fort Valley State University in Georgia. He holds a master’s degree in sociology from Auburn University in Alabama and a Ph.D. in sociology from Iowa State University in Ames.
