Two African American Men Appointed to Administrative Posts in Higher Education

Luke Givens is the new director of multicultural affairs at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. African Americans make up only 4 percent of the undergraduate student body at the university.

Givens has been serving as retention and multicultural center coordinator at the Cascade campus of Portland Community College in Oregon. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, and a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.

Dan Bunch was appointed special assistant to the vice president for student affairs at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. He is the former director of the Learning to Learn program at Boston College. He retired from that post in June 2017. He also served as chair of the Black Faculty, Staff and Administrators Association.

Bunch holds a bachelor’s degree in education and a master of social work degree from Boston College.

  1. There’s an editorial correction required for the article on Dan Bunch. Dan Bunch held a very significant position at Boston College. Specifically Dan was the Director of the Learning to Learn Program NOT Living to Learn Project. The work of the program and that of Dan left a permanent impact on everyone that transitioned through the program and had the fortunate opportunity to work with Dan. What was actually stated in the article completely undermines the overarching impact the program has made.
